I have both the 50mm f1.4 and the 40mm pancake, and as others have alluded to, they are different in many ways.

The 50 has a nice edge of frame softness, short DOF wide open, which is beaut for portraits, etc.
The 40 on the other hand is sharp wide open with really good contrast, great for landscapes (even better at f4-5.6)

Plus, the 40 on the 5D3 helps to keep it small, for wandering around crowds (not so obvious) :)
5D mk3 with grip, 300 f4 L, 100 IS Macro L, 50 f1.4, 50 f1.8, 40 f2.8 pancake, 35 f2, 1.4x TC III, Zeiss 15mm f2.8, 24 f1.4 L
580EX II, MT-24EX Macro Flash
EF 12mm and 25mm II Extension tubes

Yeah.  Actually, mine didn't either.  I emailed b&h about it and no really detailed response other than that the lens was in their current/recent stock.  Sad sad..
btw, the lens is fantastic for still and slow objects.  Anything a little quick is not good as the lens is super duper slow.  Oh well, 129, I'll keep the lens cap.  :D

No special pinch cap for mine either.  Although I like the side pinching, I think its easier.  Focus seems fast enough for me.  Gave the lens to my brother and he was taking shots of kids running around in the house with bounce flash.  Certainly is a nice lightweight non-obtrusive lens compared to the 24-70.

Mine came with a pinch cap.

Side pinch cap on mine too...not the 'new' style.

Interesting...
