Move away from Canon to Nikon for sports?

At a sports event where pro photographers usually number 2:1 or so for Canon to Nikon bodies and lenses, the ratio was 3:2 for Nikon to Canon.

Like in pro sports shooting with 1d4/x and d4 cameras, semipro 5d3/d610 or amateur-crop shooting? As far as I see it, the area where Nikon blows Canon out of the water af-wise is in the sub-$2000 ff market, while in crop a 7d/70d af probably is "good enough" even with the d7100 being clearly superior.

Sometimes its 3-1 Canon, sometimes 2-1 Nikon.  A lot of it has to do with how good of a deal is offered to the news agencies by the camera makers.
It has little to do with a photographer having a choice.

That is presumably to small of a sample size.  Trust in numbers... large numbers... they lie less.
Upgrade  path.->means the former was sold for the latter.

As far as my preference goes, all I can say is "Canon 200mm F/1.8 USM".

For quick action on a field, rock climbers trying a difficult rock face or free ride mountain bikers, I only have to reach for this lens to capture the action.

Where can I find one of those so I can be sufficiently sticker shocked?

Try ebay.  they are discontinued and one of those lenses that have a big following.

I went to Ebay and saw one for $3000... that wasn't outrageous...

That's only because it was succeeded by the phenomenal 200 f/2 IS, which is only slightly slower (faster AF, though) but has IS and is also lighter for $5700. $3-4K is actually pretty cheap
