Problem with 1Dx AWB on cloudy days
« on: January 01, 2014, 06:57:56 PM »
I find that AWB on my 1Dx cameras does not work well.  Is this problem well known? Is there a fix for it (other than setting color temp to cloudy)?

Haven't noticed an issue (and it seems like it's cloudy every time I go out to shoot birds).  But I shoot only RAW, so I don't pay much attention to WB when shooting.  Have you considered just setting the WB to cloudy, when it's cloudy?

I do set it WB to cloudy, just surprised that 1Dx has trouble with AWB on cloudy days.  The camera does some many thing real well, I am surprised that Canon did not AWB on cloudy days better.

And yes I shoot in RAW 99.44% of the time (may be close to 99.9%)

As I said, AWB seems to work fine for me on cloudy days. Perhaps you can post an example of where it failed for you, ideally comparing AWB with cloudy WB?  (No need for two shots, if you shot RAW, just output automatic versus cloudy JPGs.)

When I rented the 1Dx for a shoot to use alongside my 5D3 I had some issues with WB in post with the 1Dx on a cloudy day. The images just did not have as much of a neutral look to them. I prefer the output of the 5D3, although the 1Dx did have a lead in extremely high ISO performance and slightly better dynamic range.

I find the AWB on my 1DX is only confused by indoor lighting (so far!), everything else is fine  virtually all the time. This is exactly the same as every other Canon digital camera I have owned/tried.
I just use AWB and shoot in RAW - 99% of the time the WB is fine and on the odd occasion it gets it wrong it is a simple adjustment in pp.

Same here. Indoor lighting often gets too warm. But, like Neuro said, it is easily fixed in post, so I donĀ“t pay much attention to it.
