Patent: EF-M 18-40 Pancake
« on: January 19, 2014, 06:09:37 PM »

A patent showing an EF-M 18-40  f/3.5-5.6 pancake has come to light. With this patent a bunch of other optical formulas also appear, such as an 18-55 pancake, 10-20, and a 9-18. We currently have an EF-M 11-22, which is probably rooted from the latter two optical formulas.

A zoom pancake would be a nice addition to the geographically fragmented and oddly marketed EOS M line.

Another stupid lens that starts at 28mm instead of 24mm (equivalent).

What makes this a pancake rather than just another zoom? Either way. Canon seem to be taking a huge gamble with this EF-M format. One I won't be assisting with even though I own an EOS M. I'll just keep using the EF adapter.

The image shown is for the old EF-M kit lens.

How many kit lens (FF, APS-C or m43) starts at 24 mm? Maybe you can design and fabricate one to show the world how it's done?

It sure looks like the world's chunkiest pancake! Actually the image is of the 11-22. It's written on the barrel.

"Oddly marketed" doesn't begin to describe this fiasco. Anyway, I have to agree with Lee Jay. A 15-50 would be much more useful than an 18-56.

Er, the 24-105 f4, probably the most ubiquitous ff kit lens ever made, oh, and it's "replacement" the 24-70 f4. And, of course, in a few markets the 24-70 f2.8 was/is a kit lens.

24-105.  Many modern compacts including the little Elph 500HS in my pocket.  My EFs 15-85 IS.

I think some are missing the point of the M system altogether. I'll spell it out for you...

this has got to be the most under supported mirrorless camera available. Samsung, Sony, Olympus, etc have 12,000 variations of every model and are constantly releasing new products to the market.
meanwhile, Canon has released one underspecced EOS-M body, and 3 lenses, one of which isn't available in America, even after being on the market for a long while.
While i'm not a fan of the brands releasing crap cameras with minor updates constantly(a la the 18mp rebel, 550D, 600D, 650D, 700D,) the current Canon strategy of releasing nothing ever is a little disconcerting for people like me who have bought in to this system.
I don't understand why they didn't release any new M bodies in 2013, especially for the holidays, and furthermore, why they still haven't released the 11-22 in the US(I thought they were waiting for a holiday 2013 release along with the M2, but that has passed.)
It's about time Canon releases some other products in to this line before I decide to cut my losses and sell my EOS-M while it is still the current model.
Pretty soon i'll be able to get a used Sony a7 to have as a second camera to my current baby, the Sony a7! I'm starting to see the current M as a red headed step  child left out in the cold by an aloof and indifferent parent.
Canon EOS-M, 22mm f2, 11-22mm f4-5.6
Canon 550D, Sigma 50mm f1.4
Nikon D700, Nikon 24-70mm f2.8, Tamron 17-35mm f2.8-4

Actually, when I mentioned kit lenses, I was only thinking of something small, lightweight and cheap. Sorry, I did not make myself clear.

The 24-105 f/4 and 24-70 f/4 lenses are both L lenses and relatively big. In this respect, only the Nikon 24-85 f/3.5-4.5 for FF which weighs ~450g qualifies. The EF-S 15-85 IS lens is big and expensive for APS-C. For m43, the Panasonic 14-42 pancake zoom somewhat qualifies although it's not too cheap.

In US and Europe, the ratio of cameraless body to DSLR sold is about 9:1.

A 'pancake' lens that's 64mm long and (at least) 58mm wide is not really my definition of a pancake.
Also, a lens that is 64mm long at one end, 62mm at the other end, and 56mm long in the middle, that you have to somehow try to get to an intermediate focal length where it's smallest to pack away, is just a damn annoying lens.
Too much gear, too little space.
