generally speaking, it's regarded slightly below the 50-500 from Sigma. Having read the Tamron review, I'd probably opt for that over this, as $150 savings probably isn't fully worth it. The Sigma will soften after 400mm where the Tamron is sharper til 500mm.

This is a very bad lens. I had this for a year or so. Af speed was OK but it had issues with focusing accurately on still subjects. Also when I tried the lens on 5D mk3 there was a noticeable difference in IQ when compared to using on my 450D.

It's not worth it. If I were to buy a telephoto zoom at this price point (plus or minus some) I would chose Tamron.

Too bad the tamarin review did not compare this lens

Roger from LensRental posted this in the comments section of the Tamron review.

"I won’t be comparing with the Sigma 150-500 because we dropped that lens a couple of years ago. Too much variation and too many soft copies – but even the good copies just weren’t that good."

I would recommend just skipping this lens and go for the Tamron.

This is a lens that has had it's market cut out from under it.... Why would you buy this lens when you could get the Tamron 150-600?

I actually had this lens. A centre crop from a 70-200 f4 is actually of better quality then the 500mm image from this monster. It has a very loud stabalisation system and is big. Too big for my taste. I also owned the 100-400, which is much much better, and you never miss the 400-500 in real life. The canon at least does a better job at full time AF with the 7D i had at the time.

I'm very curious about the tamron, which is not yet available in the netherlands.

Funny you should say this....

I did a comparison between the 70-200F4IS and the Sigma 120-400, a lens that is sharper than the 150-500...

I took pictures of a "bird" from 20 feet away and blew up the center section of each picture to show the same field of view. I also tried 1.4X and 2X teleconverters to see what they would do to the final image. (camera was 60D, both F5.6, both on very heavy and stable tripod, IS off, remote shutter with 2Second delay to avoid shake)

The first trio of pictures is of the 70-200 at 200mm, with a 1.4X teleconverter, and then with a 2X teleconverter. The second trio of pictures is of the 120-400 at 400mm, with a 1.4X teleconverter, and then with a 2X teleconverter.

It was obvious that despite only having half the reach of the 120-400, the 70-200 resolved more detail, and was slightly better with the 1.4X teleconverter, while the 120-400 started out bad and just got worse with teleconverters...
