200x zoom on SX50
« on: February 08, 2014, 12:40:39 PM »
Don Haines's comments have inspired me to test the SX50 at 200x zoom - 50x optical plus 4x digital. I am on a brief trip to Jerusalem and, as usual, slung my SX50 into my case. Today had beautiful light. Here are some shots, ranging from 24-4800mm. The quality of the digital zoom really surprised me. All the shots were taken as jpegs, with no processing - straight out of the camera. To start with, the Church of the Dormition: 24; 200; 1200; and 4800mm equivalents.
5D IV, 5DS R, 400mm DO II, 1.4xTC III, 2xTC III, EF 1.8 STM,  EF 24-105, 100-400 II, EF-S 15-85, Sigma 150-600mm C, EOS-M5 15-45, f/2 22, 11-22, Samyang 8mm f/2.8 fisheye: sold 7D II, EOS-M, Powershot G3 X,  Sigma 10-20, EF 300/2.8 II, 70-200/4 IS.

I could hardly see these cormorants with the naked eye off the coast at Jaffa. 50x zoom + 4x digital enables me to identify them. Beats digiscoping.

All the above are downsized from 4000x3000 to 800x600 for uploading and display.

Based on your images and the images of others if I had the chance to redo the hobby again I would go with this instead.

It would mean an easier out.
Visit my Flickr, Facebook & 500px and see my photos. :)

Thanks for sharing...I'll bet your shoulder and neck thanked you for toting the SX50 instead of the 5DIII and assorted lenses!  Nice camera, one my wife and I would both enjoy, and a third the price of the new Tammy lens.  With the added bonus of the slow motion feature to play with.

Hand held, and not resting the camera or my elbows on anything.

That is some serious bang for the buck, Alan ... Can't believe a $359 camera does such a decent job ... I can only imagine the photos looking even better after post processing them ... thanks for sharing.
