I need a new wide angle.  Is this worth getting, or is there something "better or comparable" coming out soon - this includes 3rd party lenses.

It depends on what you plan on shooting, and whether you really need most of that zoom range or not.  When I had my 17-40mm lens, most of the time I was shooting closer to the 17mm range.  I have the Rokinon 14mm lens if I need something really wide (usually for star trails photos, I haven't used it much for landscape), and the Zeiss 21mm that I use for landscapes (I bought mine used for around $1300, works fantastic!).   Between the Rokinon and the Zeiss, I think that covers everything I'd use the 16-35mm lens for, but with much better results.  I ended up selling my 17-40mm lens because of that.

I feel the same way in some way every time something comes along like this.  There will always be something better down the line.  The question is, what do you stand to gain NOW if you get this NOW?

It's simpler if you don't have it yet.

In my case, I currently have the 16-35 ver 1.  I LOVE IT.  I have made thousands of great images with it.  I got a great deal on it when I bought it.  So should I replace it with a version II?  I probably won't but I will say that since I got the 24-70 ver II, having my cherished 16-35 with the same size filter would be a nice.  Having a wide lens like this is great for telling the story in the image, getting lots of people in the shot and showing a big picture of what's going on.  It's NOT necc for landscapes.  I'm not a landscape photographer but I know enough to know that a ultra wide lens isn't a good landscape lens due to the distortion that happens at the edges.

I would say that if you have never used a truly wide lens, the 16-35 is a great lens to learn with.  It is extremely versatile as long as you are willing to get close, really close to your subjects.  It's wonderful indoors and in tight spaces.  But if you are shy, stick with the 24 and up lenses, zoom or otherwise.
Yes, but what would  surapon  say ??  :D

It's a wonderful lens.  I am not aware of anything better coming in the near future.

I bought it in 2012 for $1429 when B&H had instant rebate ... but for the past year or so I notice that B&H is having more of the mail-in-rebates with great prices than the instant rebates, the instant rebates they've had so far in the past year seem to be not as attractive.

I just bought one for £830.

I nearly didn't buy it because of the poor reviews this site has given it. In practice I have been pleasantly surprised really great lens nice and sharp even at 2.8 at 16mm apart from the very very far corners.

Definitely worth the purchase! Goes to show charts and internet opinion are very different than real world practice. Glad I bought one as I don't see Canon bringing one out anytime soon.

The old buy what you need now rather than waiting for what doesn't exist is good advice.

That's a really good deal!
I recommend it if it's a zoom range that you need. I use it for weddings, real estate and for both stills and video.

Hopefully B&H will do more double deals with other Canon lenses...
I've been wanting the 50 1.2L for a while. Come on B&H and Canon!

If the 16-35L (or 17-40L for that matter) would be really that bad as some people make them to be it would have hurt the sales and Canon would have replaced them by now... which they didn't.

I have the 16-35L II, and while it's a good lens, it's not stellar.  Given that my primary use is architecture and landscapes, I am considering selling it and picking up the TS-E 17mm f/4L.
EOS 1D X, EOS M, and lots of lenses

The mail in rebates are from Canon, not B&H.  For a few years Canon would have "Instant Rebates", but in 2013 switched back to mail in rebates.  I bought a 24-70 II this way around Christmas time.  The rebate was done by a company, and I received an American express gift card.

My bad. You are absolutely correct ... because I mostly buy from B&H, I typed B&H instead of Canon ... thanks for pointing it out.

Got this lens for $1299 in Amazon on Dec 2011. It was an okay lens for me. Did not really got me the wow factor. # 4 months later sold it for $1400.
