Review: Sigma 150mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro
« on: April 08, 2014, 12:07:04 PM »

Bryan over at The-Digital-Picture has posted his review of the Sigma 150mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro lens.

Says Bryan

“Sometimes a lens is remarkable for what doesn’t jump out at you – or get in your way. I have been using this lens intermittently for just under two years. It has reliably delivered excellent images for me. And that is what I expect from a good lens – one that I pick to use because of its attributes, not because I happen to be reviewing it.

I have not kept-secret my love for macro lenses and the fun that can be had with them. Aside from the OS failure issue, this lens ranks right up with some of my other favorites. The Sigma 150mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro Lens is the great-value of long focal length macro lenses.”

I love the one I own, excellent lens for photographing shy butterflies and frogs. Also its great for photographing dangerous snakes from a safe distance.

I have had this lens for almost two years and it is a great lens. It has practically replaced my 70-200 F4 IS for alot of purposes. Regarding the lens noise mentioned in the review, the IS on the 70-200 F4 IS makes twice the amount of noise when engaging/disengaging than this lens. Honestly the noises from this Sigma lens are barely audible. This should not be an issue for anyone considering this lens. Also the image floating during IS is much worse on the 70-200 F4 IS. Sharpness wise they are easily equal from F4 onwards but the bokeh on the Canon more contrasty and "special" looking. AF is fast and reliable and I have even used mine for BIF.

He hasn't yet reviewed its big brother, the Sigma 180mm 2.8 OS, which evidently knocked the socks off the hard-to-please lenstip reviewer:

Has anyone reading this tried that one?

I'm using the older non-OS version and it is my favorite lens. The new one seems to be even better, so I highly recommend it. However, it is a bit larger and 250g heavier than the old one. Otherwise it's almost perfect - sharp, low aberrations, beautiful bokeh, 20cm MWD at 1:1 magnification, popular 72mm filter thread, "free" accessories (hood, collar, case).

Received my 'working' copy of the Sigma 150mm OS. It is actually the second unit of the lens that the store had to send me. The first unit had its focus mechanism malfunctioning.

I did not have any chance to explore its image quality yet. But here is my first impression of 'handling' the lens. (disclaimer I have not handled any white L lens of Canon).

It seems like a piece of brick. It is actually heavier than it looks. The outer shell seems to use some metal parts - which gives it an even more 'heavy' and 'hunky' feel. The cylindrical hood is pretty large. on top of that if I put the hood adapter (recommended for APS-C cameras) then it almost doubles in length. The OS seems alright. I could handhold and get good sharp photos at 1/10 sec shutter speed.
