DP Review's 10 most popular camera list
« on: April 09, 2014, 12:36:37 PM »
I sometimes glance at DP Review's list of the ten most popular cameras.  I believe this refers to how many visitors are looking at the reviews, not how many are sold.

The number of Canon cameras on this list has been declining for the last year or so.  Today I looked and there isn't a single Canon on the list.

Most popular cameras according to DP Review pageviews:

Pentax K-3 7.8%
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 7.4%
Nikon D610 6.0%
Olympus OM-D E-M10 5.7%
Sony Alpha 7R 5.4%
Fujifilm X-T1 3.3%
Sony Alpha a6000 3.2%
Fujifilm X-E2 3.1%
Nikon D5300 3.0%
Samsung NX mini 2.6%

Even if you just look at DSLRs, there still isn't a Canon on the list.

I may have to tear up my Canon fanboy card if this situation continues much longer!

Most popular cameras according to DP Review pageviews

Not exactly the most relevant or meaningful of metrics.   ::)

Also, it's quite biased to the dates which reviews are posted.   If you look at  reviews by date, all 10 of those on your list are in the most recent 13 reviews, and the other 3 are the D4s (niche market) and duplicate pages for the PowerShot G1 X Mark II (and it doesn't surprise me that people don't find that terribly interesting ;) ).

No worries. Just go to Amazon's best seller's list to see what people are actually buying, not what they are reading about.

http://www.amazon.com/Best-Sellers-Camera-Photo-Digital-SLR-Cameras/zgbs/photo/3017941

As of this a.m. 14 of the top 20 are Canon and Canon has three full frame configurations in the top 20 while Nikon has one.

Of if you prefer, check out Amazon's Top Rated list to see what people think of the cameras they've bought.

The Top 20 are all Canon.  The 5DIII tops the list, and there are no Nikon FF cameras in the Top 100.

As noted, the DPR list is basically related to the articles they publish.  If someone reads a review, the camera gets a viewer.  Even Kodak cameras will get a lot of hits when DPR posts a article, just because a lot of people read it.  It does not mean they are interested in buying one, just that they read the article.

Ultimately chasing the techno/gadget geek dollar is IMHO not a very profitable market, generally new features are demanded and your product will only have a short lifespan when its "hot" before the next release steals its thunder.

They have other rankings for SLRs - I think the "Most Owned" list might make you feel better (6/10 are Canon), but you can click on the different categories to see the other DSLR rankings:

That's quite interesting. Again it is a specific audience, but you can see why Canon should bring out a 7DII, and why it must be top end but cheaper than FF: therefore aps-c. I've said before, they have positioned the xxD line to allow a 'high end' body above it, and keep that body below the FF price. That's where the market is IMO. I'd say everything is in place for the 7DII apart from the new sensor.

Also interesting on the 600/610D, or rather lack of it. A camera that is significantly better spec'd than the 6D but a tad more expensive I believe, and more than a tad less popular.

Oh no, my Canon cameras are not in the top viewed list in DP reviews  :'(  ;D ... personally I find DP review website layout to be a bit messy, so I very rarely go to their website.

Of course this could also just point out which brand has the most fanatic fan-boys (is that redundant?)   ;)

It seems to me that Canon is where Apple is. Profits and sales are good but neither are creating waves with their products any more. How long can you charge more for less? Even the strongest brands erode over time (remember Cadillac?). Eventually lagging behind others is going to impact Canon sales if first time buyers start looking elsewhere.

I hope Canon will recapture our imagination with an outstanding 5D4 next year. If we get another 5DX "fine tuning" I will keep my excellent 5Dii's and buy my first non-Canon DSLR in stead. SONY A7R looks interesting...  ;)

:o How did you see this? At least three Nikon have ratings of 4.9 or higher and belong in the top 20 - actually at the very top when I look at Amazon's customer ratings.
