at least to me, I value the opinion of actual in-the-field shooters a heck of a lot more than I value DXOmark scores, which, to put it politely, I consider a bunch of hogwash

DXO's testing is the exact opposite - scientific. Their goal is to measure a lens so that their software can make corrections for lens imperfections.
DXO confirmed that the 24-70 is sharper than the 28-70 but in some other areas, it is not as good.
