Um, your topic title is wrong (typo, I guess?)... the conclusion is "[...] the A7s to have almost a three stop advantage over the A7r" which is rather stunning and a good reason for the "the 40d had enough mp" people.

Quote
- At ISO 51,200 the A7s is quite usable with some moderate noise reduction.
– ISO 102,400 is the limit at which I would use the A7s. It needs some NR, but would be usable for non-critical applications.

Depends on what size you want to make prints to put on the wall.

I consider usable to be the point at which you don't need to use NR.

That's an intresting definition. Sometimes a bit of noise adds to an image, sometimes not. A mirrorless 12 MP Cam by Canon would be very welcome. Just hope that Sony offers their product at a reasonable price. The 51k look pretty fine to me. Wonder how Canon improves in sensor tech and low light capacity, and if they are willing to pass it down to 5Ds and 6Ds as well. Or will they keep it all for the 1Dx segment?  Should I buy another 5D within the next 6 years I hope for the same MP count and ISO 12800 like ISO 4000 on the 5D3 now.

yes. and Sony A7s is 2500 at launch and will be below 2000 street pretty soon. ;-)

Nevertheless Sony A7s is a useless product. 4K recording only with a not-yet existing 3rd party recorder (expensive and 2 peieces of equipment to lug around). And 12 MP resoultion is just not goin' to cut it in terms of resolution for a stills FF camera in 2014.

Still looking forward to an improved A8R ... same sensor, better AF, fully electronic, 100% mechanics-free shutter  with X-Sync to 1/8000s, battery charge 500+ shots and a 4k "retina" EVF ... and no video out whatsoever. ;-)

But...but...Sony says it has 15.3 stops of DR.  15.3 stops!  Never mind that it has only a 14-bit ADC, and if it uses the same RAW format as the a7R it won't even have a 14-bit RAW file.   ::)

I guess it's DXO (not Sony themselves) saying 15.3 EV ... after downsampling the image to 1 MP or so and printing it on some piece of paper using a home-office inkjet printer  ...  ;D

When more review samples start appearing, it'll be interesting to see how people compare them. dpreview will be a good place to look for that.

It seems to me that there is no support for the argument "The more megapixels, the better NR works." 8) I see many applications where 12 megapixel is enough. Let's not be hypocrites, and we admit that at 18 megapixel 1DX is sufficient for any use, and 12 megapixel is close. Oh, but there are people who want to use a 300mm lens, and crop the image to a viewing angle 800mm lens... :P
