Patent: Canon EF 400 f/4 DO IS
« on: June 20, 2014, 09:20:36 PM »

A patent for a new Canon EF 400 f/4 DO IS has appeared. The current lens has been around since December, 2001 and I think it’s a gem in the Canon lineup.

We’ve seen a lot of DO patents over the years, but no DO lens has been announced since June, 2004 when the EF 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 DO IS came to market.

Looks like a fairly different optical forumla than the current one.  I wonder what were the design goals?  Lighter (no meniscus lens)?  More contrast (the bane of the current DO lenses)?

I wonder if that is because the 70-300 didn't sell as well was expected?

If that patent is structured like all the other patents then this lens should be a 330-400mmish with no aperture?  :o Is there something special with DO lenses? Or is there just a bug on my computer?
