Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM

I just found an FD 300mm f/2.8 L and plan to convert it to EF with the Ed Mika adapter.  Essentially the same lens but no AF or IS.  Also a fraction of the cost.  Here's hoping the IQ is as good as what's shown here!

+1
That's a very cool motorsport shot. Too many motorsport images come across as quite similar looking. It's not easy to keep coming up with different shots.

The f/2.8 300is has become one of my all time favourite lenses. The more I use it, the more diverse jobs I find I'm shooting with it. It really is an all-time classic. It's usefulness will probably increase for me with the transition from APS-H 1D4 to the FF 1DX.

But the lost reach with FF on the 1DX means I'll need to pony up for a new f/2.8 400 isII . Sigh...

Thank you Paul. Wish we had Formula 1 and other major motorsports events here. I would love covering them regularly.

Fortunate for us new guys the new f/2.8 400 isII is 1.52kg lighter than the previous model. Just wish it was 28% cheaper as well. :))

The EF 300 2.8L IS Gen1 is my favourite current autofocus lens.  The IQ size and handling is amazing.  The FD 300 2.8L is indistinguishable IQ wise to my pixel peeping ways but at this focal length and typical lens usage the autofocus and IS is  really quite an advantage.  I plan to keep both, the FD is much lighter and for casual shooting my first choice and the EF is when I have to have a high critical focus keeper rate at events I get paid for.
