Canon EF 50mm f/1.0L USM

I noticed there was no thread for the 50mm f/1.0 lens so I thought I'd remedy that.

Sure, for most people this lens is irrelevant.   It is no longer in production and used copies are quite expensive ($4000-$4500).  It is heavy and very slow to focus (slower than the f/1.2 lens), and quite frankly, it is not as sharp as the f/1.4 lens.

However...

This lens can be used at f/1.0 - something no other EF lens can match - in fact, it only makes sense to use this lens at f/1.0 because otherwise the f/1.4 lens will significantly outperform it.

If it would be anywhere near sharp.....but its just so expensive and not close to sharp so you don't have any use of it as professional photographer with new high mp cameras like the 5D II/III....And in terms of bokeh? The 85 1.2 II which I use for portraits has a much nicer bokeh in my opinion!

I'm pulling this thread back from obscurity, and there's nothing any of you can do to stop me.

I enjoy seeing work from this lens;  I can only dream that Canon is working on a Mark II. With today's advances in optics and AF, I bet there would be a (very, very, small) market for it.  After all, they're selling for a small fortune significantly used.   ;D

I'm living the dream so you don't have to. 8)

Everyone always says "Oh, we have such good AF and ISO performance now, there's no need for f1." But the thing is, it's all relative. You can take that great ISO performance and AF, combine it with f1, and go just that much darker, and get just that much cleaner images. Granted, on DSLRs you don't get the full advantage of f1 due to sensors' limited capability to collect light from such a large aperture. But I still feel the advantage is there, at least as compared to my Sigma 50 art lens. When things get really, really dark, this lens can still focus on scenes where the 1.4 struggles. And yes, the sharpness is not there like the art lens, but deal with it.

Watch out for those lens flares though...

Damn. Compared to the dreamy-creamy bokeh monsters that the 85mm/1.2 and 50mm/1.2 are... the 1.0 is something, uh, different.

I enjoy turning people into bokeh dots.

Keep in mind the background of that photo is extremely busy, colorful, and contrasty. But I never got this for the bokeh, more for the low light capability.

This is one of those lenses that sounds like a good idea on paper but never lives up to your expectations. The bokeh always looked nervous to me and very distracting. Sold mine after 6 years and was the best decision I made. The biggest negative...when they need servicing you are basically screwed.
I'm limping by with my current equipment... once I get that new lens with IS and that blue goo... then I'll finally be able to go out and take my first decent picture...

That is why I insured it for replacement cost... Autofocus goes out? Toss in garbage can, have another shipped over from Japan on ebay.

So, you have a repair insurance policy on the lens. I'm surprised that's available for a lens that old.
