7D successor Poll

Given the past Polls on the 7D, I was wondering if an APS-H offering was made to match the crop-pull of the 7D (i.e. same pixel width) would it appeal to current 7D owners? Would they upgrade to it? Would current 5D owners want the extra reach offered by the APS-H? Would current 1D owners get the same reach they are missing with the 1Dx?

Edit: In option 1: We assume better feature set for Firmware; better noise/ ISO performance compared to 7Dc

The idea was to get improvements in noise/ ISO performace keeping the same MP numbers. and maybe more than 3 AEB (my Fetish I know  )

How about: 7D mkII ASP-C 24mp?  That's what I'm looking for!!!

Perhaps a better way to express this would be:

1) 7D (APS-C) 18-21 mp with image quality/noise/ISO sensitivity equal to current generation of 5D MII, $1,700 U.S.;
2) 7D (APS-C) 24 mp with image quality/noise/ISO sensitivity equal to current generation of 7D, $1,700 U.S.;
3) ?D (APS-H) 16 mp with 1 stop improvement in image quality/noise/ISO sensitivity over current generation of 5D MKII sensor, $2,500 U.S.

While I don't expect to ever see another APS-H sensor, at least these three choices seem somewhat plausible.

My vote would be for #1.

I think your #1 or #2 are a LOT more realistic with price and MP knowing Canon's MO... then again after seeing the 1dx, i would put my money on #1 but what do i know

Good choices: My thinking at the time of poll creation was: For option 1: The 5D ISO/Noise is more a function of FF sensor hence asking for that in a APS-C would perhaps be too much. Ofcourse I mean Noise with RAW, not some souped up jpeg NR algorithm right? On Option2: I did think about 24mp, but then seeing all the negative reviews of the Sony 24mp sensor regsrding noise, I chose to avoid it... too bad I cannot add it now. One of the main drivers for this poll was noise improvements.

Well, there are lots of different ways to express this choice, but I think it comes down to tradeoffs.

I understood your intent and was not being critical. We are nine months away from a new 7D so there will be lots of time to speculate (which is half the fun, isn't it?)

Assuming you can't have super-high resolution and zero noise at all ISOs, what will people opt for?

My sense is that most 7D users are pretty happy with the product as is, but if they were going to change image quality in any way,  they'd go for improved noise and ISO performance and keep the megapixels where they are. (Of course, we'd all like both).

I may be a bit optimistic that the next generation of APS-C sensors will equal the current generation of full frame, but I do expect to see progress (otherwise, why would anyone upgrade?) Perhaps performance will be somewhere between current APS-H and full-frame.

I don't really consider APS-H a viable alternative myself. Too many practical problems and, after 30 years in public relations I am pretty familiar with what terms like "keeping our options open" really mean.
