Canon EOS-1D X Battery Issues?
« on: January 15, 2012, 04:19:53 PM »
Why the delay? It’s been noted that an official weight for the new Canon EOS-1D X has yet to be finalized, I’m told the battery is the reason for this. It was suggested they’re having “serious” issues with the new battery.

Firmware Another person has come forward and said Canon is working feverishly on firmware feature changes and updates to the EOS-1D X. The good news is Canon will do whatever it takes to get the camera to market in March as previously announced.

Pricing Change? I’m told the $6800 suggested price tag for the EOS-1D X isn’t written in stone.

The battery makes sense.  I thought the lack of weight figures was more because they were thinking of including new features maybe that could impact weight but I guess it would be too late in the design process for this.  The battery issue thus makes more sense.

Also not surprise about the price not being in stone!  With the D4 at selling at $5999, I think Canon will rethink their launch price to ensure they dont loose momentum!

Sorry for spam, but, no news about 5D Mk II (or whatever the affordable FF will be) ?

As for 1D-X, sure, that explains why there was no info about weight - issue with battery. I hope for firmware resolution of f8 for combination of TC and telephoto (for those who are professionals and can afford this body).

What the hell?? what is happening to Canon? the mkIII started it, and now the s100, 40.000 bug's with the 5d,and now this. while Nikon releases one firmware every three years and I haven't heard of any issues with any camera they made ever... I'm seriously not going to buy an X to find out it's another mk3.. my money is sitting here waiting for X , or maybe the D4? This isn't very reassuring..

If, like me, you've been reading the comments over at Nikon Rumors, it's a common complaint that the D4 battery life is significantly reduced vs. the D3S. (2,600 shots/4,200 shots respectively).  There has been some speculation (always fun) that this may have been due to the new Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Law in Japan, which was also the reason for the cessation of shipping the D300s and D700 in Japan (http://nikonrumors.com/2011/11/08/nikon-d700-d300s-and-other-products-no-longer-shipping-in-japan.aspx/).

Perhaps Canon, for whatever reasons, are running into the same problems as Nikon.

They claim that the new D4 battery is now compliant -- see Rob Galbraith's interview with D4's engineer.

At 2600 images it's still twice what I got with the mk4, just saying...

5999 or less and this gets very interesting for me personally. Although I dont envision wanting a camera like this, with such high burst and small mpx count (relatively) for landscape work. If ISO is really clean at 6400 this could work for any event work and capturing kids running indoors. As for weight and features: make it lighter and fix the f8 autofocus issue and Canon makes it even more compelling...

Still. Waiting for proper 5D successor.

In the interview at RG, it is suggested that the change in the law in Japan is the reason that the D4's battery is lower capacity than the D3s'.  It does seem a bit strange that the D300, D700 & D3s/x models cannot now be sold, whereas Canon don't seem to have had problems with their models in Japan.  I had also heard that there was something about the contacts on the older generation Nikon batteries that made them potentially susceptible to short circuiting (probably in ultra-extreme lab test circumstances).  Perhaps this is related to the rumoured 1D X battery problems -Canon may be having battery life difficulties.  If this is indeed the case, I don't think that they'll be alone...

As for the firmware updates, uncompressed video out from the HDMI connection and f/8 focusing perhaps?

Battery issues makes sense. Also, firmware is not final. You don't know what we will get in terms of all the features until the product is out. And even then, firmwares do get updates.

I can't see Canon dropping the price to $6,000. It might lower it from what it is now, ie. $6,800, but will probably not dip as low as the D4 in terms of price.

This is interesting.  Not sure if Graig would know what type of battery issue they are having.  Is it electrical or safety related or is it that it will not last as long as they want.  My 5D gives me ~500 shots per battery.  Anything above 2000 for the 1DX would be amazing.  That said, since I am not yet a 1 series user, not sure how the 1D series owners feel about that?

1D series batteries sort of, prefer not to run out.
Not owned one, but every one i know with one talks about shots between charges being in the thousands instead of hundreds.

Heck, my 5D2 with battery grip gives 2000 with the 2 batteries on, so a 1 series would definitely be in that ball park.
