Anyone able to try their 1DX2 with the 70-200mm f2.8 II plus either mk3 teleconverter?

I've got my 1DX2 pre-ordered and Canon have a £185 cashback deal on the 70-200mm if bought at the same time as certain bodies. I've currently got the 70-200mm f4 IS which is very good but I'm thinking of maybe getting the f2.8 for the extra stop plus it could be useful if it works very well with either mk3 TC on the 1DX2.

If you can try the body/lens/TC combination, how's the focus speed etc.?

Many thanks for any replies!

This is not a combo I use very often, but to me it seems to work very well. I walked around the house and tried it on various (very) low light situations. Focus is fast and accurate. I experienced hunting in only very obvious situations, where there was very little/nothing to lock on to. Outdoors it was very fast.

As usual, there is not much interesting to shoot around the house, so (surprise) this is The Local Lion enjoying his afternoon in his favourite bush (only cropped to 1:1).

Wishing I can post here soon myself too. Awesome pictures Eldar and Grant. Grant you took the camera to Africa already?

One of my main reasons for getting the 1DX-II was to get improved AF at f/8. So this image shows that. This is my first ever BIF @ 1200mm (on a monopod). Not a very good one, but at least I managed to find this Buzzard in the viewfinder. For those who have not tried ... try. I can assure you it is not easy. But the good news is that focus locked on and stayed on, at least when I managed to keep the bird in the viewfinder.

I hope to have time to shoot something worth looking at soon, but in the meantime I can only check the things I was curious about. So far, low ISO DR looks very good, properly exposed images are clearly usable up to ISO25600, AF is Very fast and it tracks beautifully, AF at f/8 was way better than I expected and the DPAF is very impressive.

I am also impressed by how fast AF is when using Live View. The shot below (not the nicest composition, I was playing around with Live View) was taken with the 1DXII in Live View, using the 200-400 with the internal 1.4x and an external 2x III combined, resulting in 1120 mm and f/11.

That is very impressive for that combo. It just entered my must try list.

Judging from some of the photos posted recently, I need to put the 2x on my 500mm and try out DPAF.  Here is a photo of a female cardinal leaping into the air.  I was not tracking, simple center point AF, and had just locked focus on the stationary bird when it took off as I pressed the shutter.  As a result it is not in tack-sharp focus (I was also doing minor adjustments to the AFMA), so not worth pixel peeping.  This is a simple crop of the original jpeg without any post processing.  ISO was a bit high at 800 for being a wide open f/4.  Distance was ~10m.  Still I thought it was a pleasing result.

When you are right you are the teacher, when you are wrong you are the student. A win-win scenario if ever there was one.

I spent the morning by a lake, primarily to try out the 1DXII. Below are a number of bird images that may be a bit more interesting than my previous posts.

In general, this is an awesome camera! I shot a number of BIF, both with and without the 1.4xIII extender, using AF case 5. AF locks on every time and stays locked on. After a while i changed to the 5DSR and it was not even close. Whatever they have done, the 1DX-II is a significant improvement. The black headed gulls, being very erratic, moving fast in all directions, has always been difficult to shoot. But with the 1DX-II it was a new experience. I have never before been in the vicinity of the keeper rates I achieved today. Unfortunately i already sold the 1DX. I would have liked to do some head to head testing with them. I hope someone else will.

I also deliberately shot some very high contrast scenes/birds, to see how the dynamic range held up. It is quite clear that this is an improvement over anything Canon delivered in the past.

The only edits I have done on these images is minor exposure adjustments, lifting shadows, lowering highlights and a minor saturation adjustment on some. No sharpening or noise reduction.
