I like the expression.

Walter: Were you listening to The Dude's story? Donny: I was bowling. Walter: So you have no frame of reference here, Donny. You're like a child who wanders into the middle of a movie and wants to know...

TY. Agreed regarding the 85II and 135 (add in the 90tse for me). Although I have been fighting off the itch to pick up the 200/2 to find out if all the claims of its greatness are legit.

I haven't touch that lens yet and will try to stay away from it ;D

My itch is 300 f2.8 IS II...will see after Sony A7 + Zeiss 50mm f1.8.

Not that any of the lenses are equivalent to each other, but I'm very interested in comparing raw portrait files from the 85, 135, 200/2, and 300II to see the differences (mainly compression and detail variances). Of course, I would need to get my hands on the latter two first  :D. Or if someone fortunate enough to have them all could do the honors?

Err hmm compression can be checked without crazy open aperture  ::) but I understand your wishes  ;D

I suppose I could check the compression of 300mm with a 70-300. But that would not provide me with justification for spending 6-7k on a lens.  :D

What I should have said was that I'm mainly interested in seeing the compression in conjunction with all the other exclusive qualities those two lenses are renown for i.e. high resolution, shallow, DOF, color rendition, contrast, etc.

"Compression" is an illusion, there is no such thing in comparing lenses; it is just perspective. For the same subject framing the greater working distance and larger aperture of the 300 bests the others easily on comparisons of the same subject in the same location when looking at background blur, actually it destroys them, despite having the deepest dof.

This is a place where I always reach for my 135.  I added some vignetting, as I usually do.

Yes.

Here is a test shot with a 300mm f2.8 IS at close to MFD, one eye (eyebrow) in focus, totally obliterated busy background.

PDB; is the lady you use as a model for demonstration purposes getting younger and prettier as time goes on, or are you posting sequentially older pictures ?  ;)
