I shot all these photos with my 5d3 and 300 2.8L or 70-200ii at 12800 ISO, 2.8, and 1/640th.  With exception of the bottom shot which was at ISO6400.

Recently, my 1DX stopped working, so while it’s at CPS getting repaired, I had to use my backup 5D3 for two straight nights of american football in the dark under stadium floodlights.

I rarely use my 5d3 for sports anymore so I thought I’d post some of the photos and give a few thoughts to others that might have a 5d3 and are thinking of upgrading to a 1DX or 1DXii....OR for someone looking to get their first full frame 5d3 for shooting sports.

First, you can definitely get great night photos at high ISO with the 5d3, I hope these photos demonstrate that.  Of course, 12800 ISO isn’t 800 ISO as far as IQ goes, but the 5d3 still has a fast enough FPS and AF system to do sport “pro” work like I did these past two nights.  I was easily able to get 25+ keepers for each game.

However, having not used the 5d3 for 3 years now since acquiring the 1DX, it was a reminder to me of how great a camera the 1dx is for sport/action photography, especially in low light.  The extra FPS and AF speed and ability to drive the 3002.8 AF more quickly was very noticeable and my keeper rate much higher as compared to the 5d3.

This isn’t a shocking revelation to anyone I’m sure, but, for someone looking to make the jump to their first full frame camera the 5d3 still does a great job and shouldn’t be ignored at about $1000 or less used.(I think)

For someone looking to make the ultimate upgrade from a 5d3 or similar to the 1DX series...yes, it IS definitely worth it and your results/keepers will go up and you’ll have a higher number of what I call “wow” shots...(the kind that make people say “wow”!)

Just some “ramblings” and observations that I hope are useful to someone...

Nice work!  And thanks for giving me confidence that an upcoming, to be purchased, 5D IV will cover the bases when the uber trusty 1DX has to go to CPS for one reason or another.  Again, nice work.
All theories are wrong, but some are useful, eh?

Nice ones Northstar.  The 5D3 is still just a great all round camera.  In the last 3 weeks I've used mine for an air to air aircraft shoot, some macro photography at a gardens, night landscapes at a harbour, portraits at a Zombie walk, a car show, a concert gig and a cricket match.

I agree with your comments about the AF being faster and it'd be nice to have a faster FPS for sports but, if you're timing is good, it's not really necessity.  If sports/action, BiF etc is your go, and you can afford it, then grab the 1Dx series but you'll still get the job done with a 5D3.

Thanks Boyer...I’ve thought about that 5div as a second camera too.

Why would you reduce IQ? To prevent someone stealing the pics?

Hi tpatana,
I was simply trying to reduce the file size for online use.  I set JPEG export quality to 8 (out of 12). To greatly reduce the file size.  I think CR's prefers us to do that.
Take care
