The next 5D: Someone posted this on Dpreview
« on: February 06, 2012, 03:42:44 AM »
Just stumbled upon this at Dpreview

Chris_in_Osaka wrote:

"Just got back from a trip to Osaka's Nipponbashi electronics district. Went to my favorite independent camera store to sell my old Olympus E-PL1 after purchasing a new E-PL3.
Got to talking about upcoming releases such as the Fuji x-pro1 and Olympus OM-D. Out of curiosity I asked him what they current trade in value of a Canon 5D Mark II was since I haven't been using mine that much due to a back injury plus hernia that I've been struggling with since November and have been toying with possibly sticking to a lighter system.
He told me ¥100,000 to ¥120,000 "depending on...."
I cut him off and said "condition" but he shrugged his head and said "Yes...and new camera specifications".
When I asked him when a new camera was coming he just smiled and held up 3 fingers...MARCH.
He also said he was not sure if the new camera would called a "5D Mark III" or whether it would have a different name. He said he expects an announcement in about "7 to 10 days".
I know a lot of people are going to jump on this post and make comments like "yeah sure, and a friend of a friend of a friend of mine said blah blah blah", but I am confident that this is accurate because I have been doing business at this shop for about 7 or 8 years and the sales clerk who I always do business with (or just chat with) used to work for Canon. I imagine he still has friends there (that's why I don't want to say which shop it is).
Anyway...we'll see if this information is correct very soon."

I would expect there to be some notice of an imminent replacement of models otherwise dealers are caught with the wrong stock. A months notice is not unreasonable...
If life is all about what you do in the time that you have, then photography is about the pictures you take not the kit that took it. Still it's fun to talk about the kit, present or future :)

"Story from DPReview" is untrue, wrong, inaccurate and misleading.

A "story" would carry the DP Review imprimatur -- meaning the publication would have vetted it and would stand behind its accuracy and credibility. This is not a "story" in DP Review.

What's being "reported" here as a "story" is nothing more than a posting on a DP Review Forum. It's no more than "some guy said," what would be called hearsay in a courtroom.

Had this post been correctly labeled as "Someone in the DPReview Forum said..." I would not even have opened it.

Well, it is Monday morning!

Walter: Were you listening to The Dude's story? Donny: I was bowling. Walter: So you have no frame of reference here, Donny. You're like a child who wanders into the middle of a movie and wants to know...

@distant.star... relax man.  Geez, you know the internet is a world-wide thing right?  Not everyone is as fluent in English as you are.  Stop acting like the condescending know-it-all just because you have anonymity on the net.

If a noted or identified photographer posts something, it has some credibility, CR Guy receives tons of e-mails, and knows which ones have been reliable in the past, but keeps them confidential to protect the source.

A "Someone posted this" story could be repeated 1000 times a day, but there is no credibility, 9 year old kids like to make this stuff up.  Its best just to read it and enjoy it, but passing on gossip or tall tales will risk the wrath of many readers who are tired of totally off the wall posts.

I was pretty drunk and this guy came into my store speaking English which I have never really understood.  He asked how many glasses of Sake I drank so I held up three fingers and he smiled knowingly. He asked how long I'd been drunk and I said 7 to 10 days.

I have not been this drunk since I worked at the Salmon factory where I still know some people.  I told the English speaking guy about my good times there, and he was very happy.

"Story from DPReview" is untrue, wrong, inaccurate and misleading.

Actually - as you've insisted on going there - a very accurate synonym for "story" is "anecdote".

Which is precisely that the posting on DPR is.

Y'know, seeing as you insisted on going there...
