Canon Launches The XF405, XF400 and VIXIA GX10
« on: September 12, 2017, 12:52:14 PM »
MELVILLE, N.Y., September 12, 2017 – Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced three new additions to the company’s video camcorder lineup: the XF405 4K UHD Video Camcorder, the XF400 4K UHD Video Camcorder and the VIXIA GX10 4K UHD Video Camcorder, three lightweight and compact video camcorders that feature 4K/60p video recording.

Canon XF405, XF400 and VIXIA GX10 4K UHD Video Camcorders

The Canon XF405 and XF400 4K UHD Video Camcorders are both ideal for applications like broadcast interviews, documentaries and weddings. Designed with advanced amateurs and hobbyists in mind, the VIXIA GX10 4K UHD Video Camcorder provides the same high- image quality as the Canon XF405 and XF400.

All three models feature a newly developed 15x optical zoom lens (35 mm film equivalent: 25.5mm–382.5mm), to support 4K recording, alongside a 1.0-inch CMOS sensor and Dual DIGIC DV 6 image-processing platform, to produce stunning 4K/60p recording across the entire zoom range. In addition, the compact and lightweight body designs measure approximately 5.3in (l) x 3.8in(h) x 8.4in(d) and weigh approximately 40.5oz, 40.3oz and 40.2oz for the XF405, XF400 and VIXIA GX10, respectively. The compact and lightweight nature of all three 4K UHD models provide great mobility when shooting such scenes as news reports and events.

All three camcorders provide users with fast, highly accurate focusing through intuitive touch-panel operations and feature Dual Pixel CMOS AF—a technology that offers smooth Auto Focus(AF) operation with high-tracking capabilities, making it ideal for shooting video.

Pricing and Availability

The Canon XF405 4K UHD video camcorder, the XF400 4K UHD video camcorder and the VIXIA GX10 4K UHD video camcorder are scheduled to be available in November 2017 for estimated retail prices of $3499.001, $2999.001 and $2499.00.1 respectively. For more information, please visit, usa.canon.com

I can't find a dedicated "Magnify" button to fine-tune focus when recording.

I suppose you can assign it to the "Custom" to punch in?

Why would anyone launch an electronic device on iPhone Day?

This news is going to get buried on any site that isn't primarily camera focused.

Why would sites that are not camera-focused even report on these? These are not consumer cameras and not marketed as such.

Only if your going for the pro-level XF405, with SDI for serious studio work.

Otherwise, the $3,000 seems about right once you include the Canon tax, pro audio XLRs and 4K resolution.

That is, $500 more than the XC15 that has no power zoom option.

Maybe it has to do with the 4K Apple TV.

Yup, 4K- still as irrelevant as ever  ::)

This is absolutely perfect for low profile and lightweight run and gun news gathering, and live streaming. SDI for a reliable 1080 connection to a LiveU or Teradek, 2 XLR ports, ND, DPAF, touch to focus, UHD @ 60fps onto cheap SD cards, 1" sensor, and multiple ND filters makes this perfect for run and gun. I hope it can record UHD to the cards and push out 1080 through the SDI at the same time, it'd be nice to be able to push out an event live, but be able to make a more polished piece for social media at the end of the day.

Saw some videos online and the XF400 does in fact have a "Magnify" button on the inner part of the handle, next to the battery.

Is it safe to say that we'll be able to punch-in during recording? Can someone confirm this?

This is a pro camera. XLR inputs, broadcast codec, SDI output, etc. In fact, at the price point of $3500, its gonna force them to drop XF200/300 prices significantly, since they've been selling the non-4k XF300 for $3499.

4k/60 is surprising, but a welcome addition

Fully agree. Also mention that the 25.5mm wide lens that extends close to 400mm is the second widest and longest among fixed lens 1-inch class camcorders on market now. Ability to record 60P 4K, 8-bit 4:2:0, 150Mbps internally and 4:2:2 externally is similar to most of the competition. Add dual-pixel touch AF, canon color science, 3-stop ND filter and small form factor makes it a very interesting tool for events, interviews and news gathering.
Canon has shown that it has the technology to output 4K with more depth, higher color space and more bit rate (e.g. XC15) but I think meeting constraints such as read-write bandwidth spec of the SD cards and heat management in a reliable way has been the deciding factor for 8-bit 4:2:0, 150Mbps setting.
Of course, we could wish it had 24- instead of 16-bit audio, 10-bit 4:2:2 internal recording, more buttons, C-log, vector scope, and 12G-SDI to output 4K at 60P but it would be a different beast at a much higher price point. Still one would have said why paying $ for a camcorder.
Bottom line is that no company can deliver the trio: "size, quality, price" at the same time. select two, the third one gets compromised! Fortunately, technology and innovation will be the difference maker here.

Completely agree, although I'm still waiting for a top-level pro cam-corder with all the things you mention.

Some product or other must take the place that right now belongs to the XF300.

Update: here's a Canon rep confirming that the XF400 is NOT a replacement of the XF300--> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fRmOYnGk8U

I expect the glass to be greatly improved - the HF G40 has significant chromatic aberration.

Hello, I posted my video interview featuring the XF400/XF405 at the Canon IBC booth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fRmOYnGk8U

It seems as far as I understand:
- There is no way to record HDR HLG mode, the Wide DR mode hasn't got to do with that.
- If you buy in Europe you may be stuck with 4K50 and 4K25 there may not be a way to change the system frequency to NTSC 4K60 and 4K30. I tried finding system frequency switch in settings menu and I couldn't find it and some of the Canon reps at the booth also couldn't find it.
- Both 4K50 and 4K25 use the same 150mbit/s bitrate. I hope that the quality at 4K50 is great with their H264 encoding performance. I am hoping that when they upgrade the firmware to add their XF-AVC wrapper support that they may perhaps also be able to offer an H265 codec option at half the bitrate for the same quality.
