Canon EF 85mm f1.4L IS vs Canon EF f1.8
« on: January 03, 2018, 08:17:54 PM »
I've seen lots of comparisons from Sigma,
Tamron and the Canon f1.2L but nothing noting how the new Canon 1.4 L compares to the 1.8.  Obviously the IS and slight f stop difference but what about CA, vingetting and sharpness?

Anyone have both lenses?

Check the Lensrental review of the F1.4 that is the subject of another thread.  It has MTF comparisons of the 1.4 and 1.8.

I have. Still.

The f/1.4L IS is better at exactly everything, apart from it being a bit more than just slightly heavier.

Sharper at larger apertures, lower CA, more consistent AF at all points and distances. Vignetting is not an issue in any of my pictures so far, even wide open and uncorrected.
Preferred gear: 5D IV, 35/1.4L, 85/1.4L IS, 70-200/2.8L IS, Elinchrom RX
Backup: 5D II, 17-40/4L, 85/1.8, 100-400/4.5-5.6L, Yongnuo + 622

I guess this new lens kills any chance of a lighter and cheaper EF 85/1.8 IS to match my EF 35/2 IS. Even an f/2 max aperture would be fine.
If gear matters: 5DsR, 6D, M3, Samyang 14/2.8, EF 24-105/4, EF 35/2.0IS, EF 50/2.5 macro, EF 85/1.8, EF 200/2.8II, EF 400/5.6, EF-M 11-22/4-5.6, EF-M 18-55/3.5-5.6, EF-M 55-200/4.5-6.3, Ext 1.4x, Lifesize conv, Ext tube EF25, 430EXII, 270EX, Yongnuo 603C

You're waiting for the non-L IS refresh of the 85 like I am for the 50.

Will happen.  But as anyone will tell you, it could be a very long while and it likely won't be ring USM.  My money's on nano USM.

An 85 prime is a very handy lens.

I couldn't wait for the Canon 85 1.4 IS, so I bought the Tamron 85 1.8 IS, which has been a nice, sharp lens on my full frame bodies. No autofocus issues, thankfully.

I figured that I'd sell my trusty old Canon 85 1.8, but haven't.  It feels really nice ergonomically on a rebel-class body.  The autofocus is fast and quiet.  It's reasonably sharp at F/2.2 and it acts like a 135mm lens does on a full frame body.  You do have to use a fast shutter speed to avoid motion blur of course.  I think it would make a nice indoor sports lens or longish portrait lens for crop sensor shooters.
Current bodies:  5D4, 5D3, 77D, T5i, S100, S90
Lenses: 24-70 L2, 135 f/2.0 L, Tamron 85 f/1.8, 200 f/2.8 L, 50 f/1.2L, 24-105 L, 70-200 f/4 L, 35 f/2 IS, 24&40 pancakes, EF-S 18-135,
