Rattle in lens
« on: February 19, 2018, 02:13:16 PM »
Hi all
Managed to drop my 100-400 II over the weekend- not too far but not the best thing to do. After picking it up I noticed a slight rattle which I had not before, but there again I was not listening carefully before either. The lens appears to IS and focus OK. Is the rattle just the IS mechanism not working - anyone else have a rattle in their 100-400 II?
Or do I need to get this checked out?
Thanks

Send it to Canon for a checkup, describing concerns same as in your post.

A rattle is quite normal.  Don't worry.

I've certainly heard my IS lenses rattle - especially the 100L Macro - occasionally when not powered/attached, even though there's nothing wrong with them. Although if it started after a drop, I'd still be tempted to get it checked out.
Current equipment: 5Ds, 5D mark III, 50D, 24-105L, MP-E, 100L macro, 500L IS II; 1.4xIII + 2x III extenders; 600EX-RT.
Former equipment includes: 300D; EOS-M, EF-M 18-55, Samyang 14mm f/2.8, EF 35 f/2 IS, 70-200L f/4 non-IS and f/2.8L IS II, 85L II, Sigma 180 macro, 200L 2.8, 400L 5.6

Thanks for your replies. The rattle is less noisy than the rattle from my 70-200 and 100 f/2.8L, so I suspect it is OK, but I will check what Canon say.

A rattle developed in my 100L.  I traced it to a loose front element.  A spanner tightened it up and eliminated the issue.  I attribute it to a Sigma TC that I tried on the lens.  It went wild vibrating before I shut the camera off.  I think it literally shook the front ring that holds the lens loose.
