No f/8.0 autofocus with 5D Mark III

Well, I wouldn't have expected it on the 5D3, but i'm still shocked it wasn't on the 1DX.

Depending on how many pre-orders they get for the 5D3 (and how many cancel their 1DX pre-order), maybe they'll consider adding it to the 1DX before launch?

(or might we see it on the 7D2?)

Ditto. The 1D IV is still pretty much king for BIF w/ TC's. I would love to get a 1D X, but lack of f/8...and the fact that a much cheaper used 1D IV would have it, pretty much answers the question for me.

If i could get a 7D2 at 18-24MP aps-c, 10fps,  the 41pt af from the 1d4, but most importantly the f/8 point, and if the IQ of that was as good as the 1D4 (after a few more years of tech research, it's possible), i'd see it as an upgrade from a 1d4.
But yeah, at the moment the 1d4 is an upgrade from the 7d, i'd still be interested in getting one if i could afford it...

Well, IF the 7D2 got f/8 AF, that would be a game changer. There is still a lot going for the 1D IV that will likely never find its way into any lower model, like its build and weather sealing quality. I think f/8 shooting is one of those things (which, sadly, may actually be going away entirely from Canon cameras...and if it really does, then that would be a serious blow to Canon's reputation and might actually cause a lot of photographers who need extreme telephoto reach to ditch the brand.) If, at least for the time being, Canon has dropped f/8 AF, then I foresee the 1D IV becoming an incredibly important component of their pro lineup. I didn't understand the need for f/8 AF before, however having shot birds a lot recently with 400 to 500mm lenses at f/4 to f/5.6, they really just don't have enough reach for full detail frame filling shots. When you move to full frame (or APS-H), the need for extra reach is even more important. A 600mm f/4 with a 2x TC gives you 1200mm at f/8!! That kind of reach almost makes you salivate, and losing the ability to do so would really be one of the biggest blows to my desire to stay with Canon equipment. Sadly, I find the prospects of a 7D II getting f/8 about as likely as peace on earth.

There a better option than to design complex f8 AF point sacrifying the extra presicion AF points.
Just double the number of pixels. This will be equal to an 1.4x extender.
So a 1DX with 36MP instead would have been equal to the current 18MP 1DX with a build in 1.0x to 1.4x extender zoom.

Indeed that was why I got the 1D4 and the 600 f/4. With the 2x this gives the equivalent of 1560mm, quality is decent and AF is reasonably quick (about the same as the 7D on a 400 f/2.

You who need the extra reach the f8 AF can give you with extender.
Why is it the f8 you are so focused and dissapointed about? What is the reason you instead are not demanding the double number of pixels? That would give you the equivalent of an 1.4x but with much better AF than f8 AF could ever give you. Since the 1.4x is probably not ideal either the increased density would also provide you better IQ (perhaps this is neglectable but you would never get worse IQ with double number of pixels than with and 1.4x).
So what is the reason you are asking for the inferior solution to your needs?

Canon really puts some shooters in a bind. The 7D and to a lesser extent the 1D4 give the sports shooter extra reach. On the other hand, one of the great advantages of the 5D3 & 1DX is the amazing ISO performance which makes huge 2.8 lenses less necessary. Slap a 100-400 on a 5D3 or 1DX and you can finally shoot at dusk with good results. Ahh... but here's the rub: to get your 100-400 the reach of the 1D4 or a 7D you have to put a teleconverter on it. Finally! The 5D3 is the fabled 7D2 full frame!

Oh wait. The teleconverter won't work.
