No f/8.0 autofocus with 5D Mark III

Canon really puts some shooters in a bind. The 7D and to a lesser extent the 1D4 give the sports shooter extra reach. On the other hand, one of the great advantages of the 5D3 & 1DX is the amazing ISO performance which makes huge 2.8 lenses less necessary. Slap a 100-400 on a 5D3 or 1DX and you can finally shoot at dusk with good results. Ahh... but here's the rub: to get your 100-400 the reach of the 1D4 or a 7D you have to put a teleconverter on it. Finally! The 5D3 is the fabled 7D2 full frame!

Oh wait. The teleconverter won't work.

The best compromize is to increase number of pixels instead of using teleconverters.

D800 has AF with f/8.0 lenses. And they charge more for the 5D3. 

To early to say what the street prices will be

Street price will be MSRP for at least 6 months. After which I do not really expect it to lower any further.

Historically the street price usually is 20-30% below msrp - and that is what I expect from the 5DIII

Historically the 5D Mark II's pricing would disagree with that.

Current UK msrp is £2300, street price £1500 which is now over 30% off.

While this is true, the 5D Mark II was released in late 2008 (over three years ago).  If I recall correctly, most companies were selling it as MSRP for the first several months, if not the first year, as it was in high demand and availability was limited.  If would expect the Mark III will be just as difficult to find during the first several months and the price of it to stay pretty firm.  If you want to get it lower than MSRP, you will likely have to wait until late this year or early next year (at the earliest; it could be an even longer wait).

But they delivered a sensor with sufficient MP for cropping to make up for the loss of reach.

From experience I would say that a 400 f/2.8 + 2x gives as good IQ as a 100-400 regardless of body

A 'standard' BIF outfit is a 1D4 + 500 f/4 plus as needed a 1.4

The best IQ is always with the lowest IQ (down to 100) so I would only use high iso if there wasn't an option so deliberately using a slow 100-400 at dusk because the body has high iso is something I would avoid if possible.

Below is my test picture with the 400 f/2.8 + 2x + 1.4 -> testing f8 AF - using the 1Ds3, 1/800, iso400

From my perspective, I never really ever shoot in a situation (2x extenders) and I try to get as close as possible to my subject matter that it hardly becomes an issue. Not to say that I wont ever get in that situation and using a 2x extender on a F4 lens wouldn't be nice to use and I know if i had to use that combo I'd want AF and would be frustrated if I couldn't, BUT, it is what it is.  I guess, for me, from the early days at college when i could use/borrow any lens/extender/camera I needed for any assignment, it never sat well with me I'd be losing more light and I thought it was stupid so i made the conscious decision to not use/need extenders.  Oh well, the 1dx and 5d3 are still awesome cameras to me so I'll be grabbing mine asap.

Did you know the vIII telles will not stack?  I have the 1.4X and 2X IIIs (replacing my vIIs), and I cannot stack them.  Not that I got good photos that way anyway.
