Do any other these retailers (BH, Adorama, Amazon) actually close pre-orders when the initial shipment has been filled? Or do they keep pre-orders open all the way until the product is released?

On the amazon listing
"Note on Availability:This item is in high demand and we have taken orders up to our initial allocations. We will continue to accept pre-orders and fill them as soon as additional inventory becomes available. We will not charge your credit card until we ship the product."
5DIII 8-200mm minus 35mm in there.

Adorama and B&H, and occasionally Amazon will send you a e-mail every 30 days asking you to confirm that you still want to be on the waiting list.

This is due, at least in part, to consumer protection laws that require sellers to process a credit card order in 30 days or give you a opportunity to cancel.

Thanks for the input kidnaper and Mt Spokane :)

So BH and Adorama have not updated any information on their sites indicating that the initial pre-order has been filled. Sorry for beating around the bush, but what I really should have asked was:

Is there any way to find out whether your pre-order has made the initial shipment? I figured I should ask here first before trying to call BH since I'm sure they have been getting bombarded by phone calls by people trying to find out the same thing.

Helen Oster from Adorama posted on pg1 of this thread, that allocations for sellers have not been established by Canon.  Its likely that orders have not yet been placed either.  Canon may give allocations based on the number of pre-orders placed, as well as past history of dealer sales performance.  Amazon may have estimated how many bodies they would get, but I would not take the information as actual fact of a specific count.

We have never been given actual numbers of any new camera supplied to a dealer, that is confidential information.

And since someone else mentioned bestbuy...they have pre-order too.  Plus 18 months interest free financing and a % back via their reward zone card.  Normally you can get a better deal with cash as B&H, but not when the item is new.  BB is where I went and hopefully I won't be any later than anyone else.

Except since I live in CA, B&H don't directly charge me sales tax  :o

Ah I see. Thanks for clarifying that. I guess now the anxiety will continue building hoping that I made it in the first shipment from BH lol. I thought the anticipation/anzxiety was over once the 5D3 got announced but I was mistaken  ;). There's nothing more to do than sit around fidgeting until the shipping confirmation appears in my inbox  :D
