Buy it from Amazon or BH.
If they don't ship to UK then get yourself an address from forwarding company like Myus.com and they will ship it to you for $100 or less.
Amazon or BH > Myus > you
I've never even heard of this type of thing. Wont I still end up getting taxed if I use the forwarding company? If I fly somewhere surely I can just pick it up and fly back and leave the box behind.
The answer is... probably. I live in the UK and spend a lot of time (and money) in the US. Shipping over here is liable for searches. If the item has a declared value of over £23, it's liable for import tax. This is the VAT, a handling fee of £18 by parceforce for "holding", and any other duties they feel like adding. Seriously. I've ordered a $60 Art print before, and had to pay £33 in release fees.
IF the item is marked as a gift, then it is not liable to those taxes (although for an item worth thousands, this might change, I don't know). You would still be best advised to insure it, and ship via fedex or something - if you expedite next day or the day after, it's more expensive, but less likely (statistically) to get held at customs, because the parcel company is liable for the delay in delivery.
I've pre-ordered, and got it shipped to my friends in the states. The conversion difference, after NY tax of 10%, is still £600. That's enough for a cheap weekend trip to NY, pick it up, bin the box and come back through with it over your shoulder.... not that I suggested it.
