Is the 5D Mark III going to sell more than the Nikon D800?

Just for shits and giggles. What do you guys think? So far Amazon the 5D Mark III is number one on the digital SLR best sellers list. The D800 isn't even on the top 50. Is this any indication?

remember the D800 came out earlier. It sold out in less than 24 hours. by now all the orders are in so off course it is not going to track as high on the list given its initial rush is now over. conversely the 5DIII just started its mad rush.

you realize the 5DmkIII will be outsold by several point and shoots by the tens of thousands right? if it does or doesn't outsell a camera that isn't even competing in the same category, who cares? are you buying the camera because of how it outsells or doesn't?

The D800 is aimed at a different type of audience so I wouldn't let its sales factor into any decision I make.
If you want accurate sale figures wait for the various market research surveys on marketshare that will be out next year....then again, such numbers are worthless for they say nothing about a camera.

Actually, I got curious about this and checked the Amazon site. While the 5D III has shot to the top of the sales list (which is pretty darn impressive considering it's about 10 times more expensive than many of the other cameras on the list), the Nikon D800 isn't on the list simply because Amazon isn't accepting orders for it at this time.

I think the 5D III will be a great seller and may well sell much better than the D800, but drawing that conclusion now is simply incorrect. Wait until orders are being accepted for both cameras and then wait another six months or so and see how the cameras have ranked.

Yes, not so much because it's the better body, but because Canon has more market share.

Yes, Canon has the larger user base and I think the 5dIII will appeal to a larger % of those users than the D800 especially given Nikon's traditional stance on more MPs.

In general, most people care more about brand then details, so since Canon has a larger market share chances are they will outsell the D800 by simple virtue of having more customers.

Not to mention that the 5D has established its name in the younger high school/college student crowd.

This is the same thing that happened regarding Nikon's D90. Back when the D90 was super popular, most high school students or college students could name drop the D90. If they heard about any camera, it was most likely the D90.

Now it is the 5D that took that spot. There's a good chance that anybody remotely interested in cameras has heard of the 5D and/or knows about it. Not many of my friends know of the D700/D800, but many of them know about the 5D.

So in terms of name recognition alone, Canon has the upper hand (at least with my experiences).

Yes because Canon has a better captive market with the 5D and even 7D. Many will move up and some will even move to the MKII which is now affordable. Very few switch because they own Canon lenses.
