Does anyone remember if pre-orders for 5d2 were available the day after it was announced? And was it to be available for sale within 30 odd days of announcement?
My mind is working overtime and wondering if Canon wants to sell as many 5d3's as it can in the announcement frenzy?
I know it is great for gear to be available for purchase right after release but does this match Canon's history?

I ordered mine the day it was announced and received my 5D MK II in the first batch.  Their may be even more pre-orders this time, but i also expect the production line will be churning them out at a faster rate than in 2008.

Chuck W mentioned with the 5d2, there was only 1 factory pumping those cameras out but with the 5d3, they have 2 factories dedicated at pumping them out, so hopefully we will see them flowing out to us soon.

Meeting Demand for the 5D Mark III

To keep up with what is expected to be a heavy demand for the Canon 5D Mark III, Westfall noted that two factories will be devoted to its production compared to one factory for the previous model, when it launched.

The 5D Mark II was so popular when it launched it was frequently sold out and backordered for months at a time. Westfall said he didn’t anticipate the same issues with the Mark III.

“We’ve built up inventory already,” he said.  “Our manufacturing capacity is definitely much better than it was.”

With Nikon making 30,000 units a month of the D800, perhaps Canon is doubling that?

Obviously, if Canon can deliver, and there is a waiting list for Nikon, Canon will get the sales from the pent up demand for a new body.
