Post your C1, C2, C3 settings
« on: March 24, 2012, 09:22:49 PM »
Hi Folks,
I'm looking for some good ideas for C1-C3. Presently I have C1 as the "Oh the kid is doing something - I have to get a shot quick!" setting. On another thread I read some good posts about using the C3 for that.

Could you please post your C1-C3, with the exact settings that are saved there? That would be at least

  • f/stop
  • shutter speed
  • ISO
  • Focus mode
  • AF Points

Thanks!

I'm a food photographer, but I recently shot a feature on the 5d2.  For that reason, I set C3 on my new 5d3 to ideal video settings.

Shutter Speed 50
Aperature 5.6 (this would change depending on the shot)
ISO 160 (I am just assuming right now that the 5d3 is still cleanest for video at multiples of 160)
Neutral picture style with 2 extra notches less contrast (my personal video choice, wasn't happy with the grading on the technicolor picture style)
Then I have the camera set to 1080p at 24fps and All-I compression.

While I change the aperture and ISO frequently, I use ND filters to deal with the slow shutter speed outside, as that really keeps the filmic look.

I like being able to jump straight to these settings for video, as it leaves my camera free to be a stills camera the rest of the time!

I use the custom functions as a starting point for certain situations, usually I adjust a bit, but it's easy to forget some of the settings hidden in the menu

C1 (Video)
ALL- I 24fps
f/2.8
1/50
ISO 320
Cinestyle Profile
All noise reduction, highlight tone priority, etc. OFF
WB: Kelvin 3200

C2 (High speed)
f/2.8
ISO320
1/1600
AI Servo
Neutral
WB: Daylight

C3 (Time Lapse)
f/2
ISO 1600
4 Seconds
Neutral
5DIII/5DII/Bunch of L's and ZE's, currently rearranging.

Something I've been wondering, there is all this wasted space on the dial, why not have more than 3 C positions?

Thanks for the settings guys. Hoping for some more - anybody else?

I've really been clueless on good programming for these.

I adjust it on location but usually this is a combination of adjustments for specific shooting modes but they differ on what currently is being shot.

Generally when on event, including white balance on grey even while shooting all in RAW:
1. With flash - ISO max 200, just enough shutter to freeze action allowing as much backgrund light as possible, F5.6-8
2. Without flash - ISO max 800, no less than 1/30s, usually 1/longest focal on most prospectly used lens, F4-8
3. Without flash - ISO max 800, f fastest + for most used lens

When on action, sport, wild shooting - 1 becomes fast shutter, 2 - "situation shooting ready" around the scene
Video used mostly with magic lantern with it's custom settings.
