Canon Prepping a High MP Killer?
« on: March 28, 2012, 10:35:35 PM »
I've been getting into some friendly D800 vs. 5D3 battles with other shooters lately, and at first I really thought Canon dropped the ball with the 5D3.  But with a look at Canon's recent product launches, and rumors of what's to come, I'm now of the mindset that Canon has some insanely high MP body on the very near hoizon.  Hear me out...

  • Canon launches the 7D three years ago at 18MP ... an equivalent pixel density of 47MP on a full frame sensor.
  • Canon debuts their 120MP APS-H sensor in 2010
  • Canon starts releasing Mark II lens updates that clearly outresolve the capabilities of its current sensors (e.g., 70-200 II and 24-70 II)
  • Canon launches a 5D3 at 22MP - intentionally lower than the 36MP Nikon competition

With the pixel density of the 7D, Canon clearly has been working hard on high MP tech.  And with the list above I read between the lines to see Canon saying --- "We're working on something with huge MP... we now have the glass and sensor tech to do it, we just wanted to see what Nikon did first."  As market leader, Canon can afford the luxury of letting Nikon go high MP first.  I mean, why not?  They may lose a little market share, but they know they'll still be on top.  The 5D3 allows them to remain competitive while taking the time to tear down the D800, and develop a quick response ... that's even better.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I see something huge on the horizon.  Maybe 40MP+ and possibly by the end of the year.  Anyone else think this is a viable approach?  Or have I lost my mind?

I'm not sure what the image quality will be like though
I'm not a fan of the 18MP APS-C IQ and after 4 years
the 5Dmk3 shows no improvement at ISO 100 over the 5Dmk2
(obviously high iso has stepped up though)

maybe if they have gotten control of the noise issues with the 18 MP APS-C both low and high ISO
and managed to sharpen it up a bit. Then 47MP might have some potential
but with no earth shattering kaboom improvements in IQ from 21MP to 22MP its hard to see them pulling it off

(I BET THIS THREAD TURNS INTO A MASSIVE TECHNICAL ARGUEMENT. AGAIN) ;)

Not this year for sure.

Likely in 2014 or later.

You are right.

A high MP "killer" from Canon, won't kill anything, if they dont give it a brand new and highly improved sensor. Higher IQ, more detail and a 2 - 3 stop improvement in DR should do it! Canon really needs to start competing with Nikon's (Sony's) Exmore sensor.

They told they are ready if market demands it. d800 shows it might be true. So why not?

they should just buy fuji and assimilate their stunning new sensors into the already stellar canon lens arsenal
I think if you extrapolate the X10 sensor to full frame you will get something like 192MP. And its a pretty good lil ol sensor already.
Its fine at 1600 ISO and useable with PP Noise reduction to 3200 ISO also ISO100 is clean and sharp

Very interesting concept. Could Samsung buy Canon?

So when this mega mega-pixel camera with production costs as high as the 1dx comes out, who's actually willing to pay $5000-6000 to get it? 3 processors to handle the massive files, FF sensor, AF that doesn't't remind you of the 5d mk ii and 4k video doesn't come cheap.
7d, 5d mk iii, 1d4, 1dx, 35mm f1.4L, 70-200mm IS ii USM, 300mm f4 IS USM, 600mm f4l is USM, 400mm f2.8l is usm, 14mm tamron f2.8, 17-40mm f4L, 24-70 f2.8L USM, 85f1.2L USM, 100mm f2.8 macro

If's it's got base-iso DR as good as good or better than D7000 or D800 with no more pattern noise limiting the shadow areas I'll gladly take one or two.  Would be cheaper than buying all new glass to fit a D800.
