72mm-77mm Step-Up Ring with Canon 35mm F/1.4
« on: April 01, 2012, 01:59:09 AM »
I'm going to get a 35mm F/1.4L as my walk around lens for my 5D MK3.
It takes 72mm filters.
Is there additional vignetting introduced by using a step-up ring (B+W) so that I can use 77mm filters and share them with my other lenses?

Cheers

35mm isn't particularly wide angle so you shouldn't have a problem, you could probably step down without introducing vignetting, obviously going the other way is less of an issue.  Step up rings are so cheap that you can try it out for yourself and if you don't like them there's not much lost.  Just remember to add a couple of filter wrenches (again cheap) for the inevitable time they do get stuck together.

I was thinking about the extra height of the stacked filters introducing vignetting rather than the diameter, but good point...

Filter wrenches?
Tell me more, I had this problem before with my Nikon lenses and ended up selling a lens with the step up + B+W UV cause I couldn't get them apart :(

Cheers

No, you won't have any issues with vignetting - the 35L has a big safety margin there, my tests show that you can stack three standard (F-Pro) filters with no increased vignetting.

The problem you will have with a 72-to-77mm step up ring on the 35L is that you cannot mount the lens hood over the step-up ring (I just tried it), nor can you really screw in the ring/filter after mounting the hood (maybe if you iron your fingers flat first).  It's rare that you can use both hood and a step up ring (possible with 77mm filters on the 85L II, but not on any other lens I've tried).  So, you'd need to choose between filter and hood with 77mm filters on the 35L.

Definitely get a set of filter wrenches - pairs of little plastic grippers, just search "filter wrench" on B&H or Adorama, they're ~$5 a set, you need the right range for your filter sizes.

I use one on my 35L and absolutely no issues. I do believe the 5dII auto corrects vignetting anyway (not that you asked!!) but don't think it would be an issue anyway.

The irony is this: my 77mm filter that I use is a.....Nikon Clear filter!

Got it when our local Ritz went out of business for like $25 or something ridiculously cheap. Awesome filter BTW
