Sigma 85 1.4 vs Canon 85 1.2L
« on: April 05, 2012, 01:43:04 PM »
I'm about to invest in an 85mm lens and I've heard amazing things about both of these lenses.  Is the 85L really $1000 better than the sigma?  I shoot weddings, and want that beautiful creamy look that is so famous in Canon's L primes.  Have any of you used both of these lenses?  What would you recommend?  Thanks!

Go with the Sigma 1.4. For me it is more versatile and just as sharp.

Here's a good comparison of the two lenses
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Sigma-85mm-f-1.4-EX-DG-HSM-Lens-Review.aspx

Going by the images in this review, the Sigma has very creamy bokeh.  The Canon's bokeh is ever so slightly more creamy, though.  Whether it's $1000 more cream only you can decide.

the sigma is faster focusing than the lethargic beast of an L lens. But the L lens is creamier and better built although its not weather sealed.I would go for the siggy but i have heard of focussing issues dont know if there is any truth to them though.

Somehow this reminds me of an old Monty Python sketch about two bored commercial airline pilots on a transatlantic flight. To kill some time, the captain broadcasts over the intercom:
- Hello, this is your Captain speaking. There is absolutely no cause for alarm.

Sorry for the slightly tangential post, but I hope you see the connection to your statement about the Sigma AF! :)

Find the sketch on youtube: Monty Python Airplane Pilots

If budget isnt an obstacle, grab the 1.2 canon.. Slow AF aint that slow after all
