These portraits of criminals come from the archives of the police in Sydney.
Police officer-photographer who took them in the 1920s was to have a great sense of artistic, even ignoring the context each photo is superb.

Interesting photos, 90+ years old and they look great.  I love their three dimensional look, shallow DoF.  I'll guess they were shot on 4x5 film or larger.

These shots are incredible, if I ever get arrested on a trip to Australia, i think I would be disappointed by the mugshots I would receive...

I'll definitely keep in mind, that getting arrested in Australia has added value of a great mugshot.
