EF-S 15-60 f/2.8 IS [CR1]
« on: February 11, 2011, 12:59:31 PM »
Coming May 2011? A replacement of the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS could take the form of an EF-S  15-60 f/2.8 IS. It would have the same build quality of the current 15-85. May 2011 was mentioned for an announcement.

CR’s Take I’ve seen similar stuff about the 17-55 in the past. It’s a lens that could use a refresh to keep the EF-S range from becoming stagnant. Canon is committed to APS-C.

If it happens, I might get it. I went for the 15-85 as my standard zoom as I need range (at good enough quality) more than aperture, but sometimes the extra aperture could come in handy... the extra wide angle is enough to make it interesting that I would be willing to lose a little on the long end.

If/when it happens I hope it brings some cheap(er) 17-55mm's onto the used market (and/or 15-85mm's).  An improved 35mm f2 (EF or EF-S) or 28mm f1.8 USM would be more appealing for me personally, but I welcome this potential newcomer.

If I'm not mistaken, those specs would give it the "longest hand-held shutter speed zoom" crown in the marketplace.  I don't think anyone else has a lens that can do 15mm, IS and f2.8 all at once

I'm totally interested to see if more info on this pops up. I think it has potential to be a big seller.

Well, 24-96mm range @ f/4.5 on APS-C cameras, if you want to compare apples to apples.  But still, a lens like this would be a welcome addition to the lineup!

Only if you are talking depth of focus. F2.8 is F2.8 in terms of light no matter if its APS-C or full frame.

How about a few updates to the low to mid rage EF lineup?  What about an update to the 28-135 or  28-200??    If you own a 5D the only decent up to date standard zoom is the 24-105 or 24-70, both of which are expensive. All the rest of the EF more affordable options are 1990's releases.  What about a 24-135 f2.8-4.5 IS priced at approx £500? :)
Better to live in denial, that way you wont be disappointed!

It would have the same build quality of the current 15-85.

The 15-85 is weaker than the 17-55 both in terms of optical quality (resolution, barrel distortions...) and build quality. So I don't understand why Canon believes such a lens would be a worthy replacement of the 17-55. If they don't make it as good as (or better than) the current 17-55, I can hardly imagine a 17-55 owner willing to "upgrade"(downgrade would be the better word actually)...

I'd really like to see a new standard zoom with better reach than 17-55 F2.8 and faster than the 15-85. Maybe a 24-105 F4.0 equivalent for crop cameras. 15-60 F2.8 would certainly be a step in that direction, but Ideally I'd like a bit more range, 15-70 or even 17-70 would have been a close to perfect range for me, F2.8 would be nice, but F2.8-F4.0 would be OK too.

The proposed lens is equivalent to 24-96mm, that is the exact same range as the 24-105mm with a full stop advantage (and don't nitpick about the missing 9mm's, because that is a nearly inperceptable difference in focal length).

I have the 17-55 IS, but unlike most owners of this lens, I never really started to like it. I still very much prefer my 24-105 (yes, even on the 7D). I never found the 17-55 particularly sharp and focus is so-so at best (yes, it already went to Canon once together with the body). Maybe I have a sub-par sample.
Anyway, I had already considered selling it -- no reason for it sitting at home or staying in the bag most of the time. While I don't expect a too huge price drop on the second hand market if a successor is introduced -- in particular with Canon's recent tendency to prices increases of not under 25% for any new lens -- I might sell it and give the new one a try, at least if the folks at Canon can keep their greed under control. Or maybe I sell it and live without a "fast standard zoom", which is just what I am actually doing most of the time, anyway. The less EF-S lenses I have, the easier it will be to go to full-frame if the 5DIII is a winner (and stays affordable for mere mortals), or, put differently, the less EF(-S) lenses I have, the easier it will be for me to change camp if Canon continues to disappoint.

Sorry for being so negative lately, but the latest Canon announcements -- maybe except the paper-launch of the 200-400 -- are just plain unexiting, or cater to market segments I either have no interest in (low end EF-S kit or superzoom stuff and the latest Rebel warmover) or not the money for (the new super teles).

So, 15-60 on a crop body would be 24-96. That's like having 24-105/4L on a FF body, but a stop faster at 2.8!

If Canon can do at least the quality of 17-55, this lens would be a killer, perfect for everyone from pros to travelers.

But will it truly replace 17-55? The current retail price for 17-55 is $1,179. If the rumors about this lens are true, will the price be around $1,200?

When the 15-85 was first released, it was supposed to replace 17-85. However, the original retail price for 15-85 was like $900 or so and the 17-85 was taken out of the Canon website for a little while. Many didn't feel like it was a replacement, but more like an upgrade both in terms of range-wise and quality-wise (and price-wise). For the price-wise, I understand that it's generally more costly at the wide side than the tele side. So, that's quite understandable.

If the 15-60 indeed comes out, the price may top $1,500. And, so, I am not so sure if I would ditch my 17-55 for this new lens.
