That is actually a fence that was in the background, it not the camera

I'd like to get better with my macro.  What settings were used to shoot these?  Did you use a tripod?

you can check all the setting on my flickr page if you look through the metadata. but mostly I was around F11 underexposing the background by 2 or 3 stops and lighting the butterfly with a speed light on ETTL on an underexposed setting (it varied from picture to picture). all the shots were hand held
