5dmkii upgrade question

My wife has a canon xsi with the kit 18-55 a 55-250 and a 50 1.8

She wants something new but will never spend the money herself (hey - life is short)

I am going to get her a 5dmkii here is the lense question.  The kit on the 5dmkii has the 24-105L $2900 ON ADORAMA.

She like to take pics of kids and people, usually at the park or outside.

Occasionally landscapes.

Should I go with the 5dmkii kit with 24-105L or something else?  The camera and 24-70L 2.8 would be closer to $3700 bought separately.  Not quite ready to spend that much.

I'm not sure I understand your question though. You're giving a figure of 2900 and another for 3700, but I'm not understanding what's included in both.

Well, if you get her a 5d2, then the 18-55 and 55-250 won't be usable on it as those are EF-S lenses.

The 24-105 may be a 'kit' lens, but it is definitely L quality as having the 'L' on it indicates. It is a zoom, so there are some compromises, but it is still a great lens and most people tend to consider it one of the best general purpose lenses out there.

I think the 5Dii body together with the 24-105L would be a fine choice. As mentioned before, it's considered a very good and highly capable allround lens on a full frame body. I love mine. And as she will still be able to use her nifty fifty on the new body she will also be able to experiment with some nice shallow dof and will also give her more flexibility indoors and/or  low light shooting.
Any lens choice beyond that should probably be made by her, as she will know best what sort of lens suits her shooting style.

Hope she loves the new camera as much as I enjoy mine!

5DII with 24-105mm kit is the way to go if you want to go full frame.  The 24-105 will give you more range at both ends than the 18-55, but you're going to lose a lot compared to the 55-250 (similar to full frame 100-400mm but a lot lighter).

If she predominately uses the 18-55, then go for the 5DII.  If she uses the 55-250 with any frequency, then you might need a longer and heavier lens to replicate the effective focal length range.  If that option isn't attractive, then it might make more sense to stay with a crop body (i.e. 60D) and upgrade the lenses instead.

5D mkII + 24-105 L IS really is a great kit. Get it! The 24-105 is better than its reputation. It´s so good I was surprised when I got mine.

I also vote 24-105L.  It is a fantastic lens for general purpose shooting.

5D2/24-105 is definitely a nice kit.  As much as I dont want to take business away from Adorama though, keep your eyes open for Beach Camera kits on eBay, they get quite a bit lower than that..

seems that has better AF and faster frame rate than the 5D2, which will work well on kids.

With the 7D she will be able to keep the lens she has right now, and I would add up a good flash and a maybe even a tripod

But there is nothing wrong with either, specially with the 5D2 - just be sure she is not going to notice that the 5D2 is not for you too after all

I recommend taking her to a store where she can actually handle one if she hasn't already.  The weight difference is substantial and she may not be comfortable manuevering an extra 2-3 pounds of camera and lens around.  My wife is tiny so my 60D with a heavy lens is like a boulder to her.

I think CR posted a note here saying the lens was delayed until perhaps July.   B&H used to say available April 17th. Now it just says: Pre order. Released in limited qty.

Has anyone received a recent estimated delivery?
