ook this in Katoomba in the Blue Mountain region in Australia back in 2010 with a 50d.  Probably should have kept more of the instrument in the shot for context.....but I was more interested in the face and texture of his hair etc

I think the composition works well, here. 
5d Mkiii; Eos-M; too many lenses; 430 EXii and a whole lot of stuff

Nice shot. Very interesting. I wish his eyes were looking straight into the lens. It would be SO striking.

For what you stated as the focus of the picture, I think your composition was good. 
I shoot with a Camera Obscura with an optical device attached that refracts and transmits light
