4x6 Dye Sub Printers
« on: May 01, 2012, 03:32:39 PM »
I have been asked to put together an idea for a large high school reunion.  In addition to formal portraits, we are also planning to have a crazy booth (not a photo booth).  We are toying with the idea of offering on-site prints (for a fee).  Looking at small print (4x6 is our target) dye sub printers, there are the cheapos for $100-$200, and then a lot for more than $1200.  Can anyone recommend a printer in the $500-$800 price point?

Also, what about software for quickly capturing and delivering the print?  These will be shot with good lighting on a white background, and I am not expecting a lot of post.  Shoot and print the crazy.

A quick glance at B&H's listings shows a couple possible candidates..

EDIT: removed a printer that's not what you're after...

HiTi P110S PocketStudio Photo Printer Kit

DNP DS-RX1 Dye-Sub Color Photo Printer

As well as a few others that might work.. B&H full listing

As far as the rest of the setup, I've seen "photobooths" (that would qualify as a crazy booth) as simple as a DSLR on a tripod, a single strobe (Alienbee, etc) with an umbrella, and a white paper backdrop. Set up a simple remote (IR or radio) or have someone at the station to control it. You could use any of a number of computer-camera tethering programs (even the stock Canon software) and the printing depends on the printer and its included software. (EDIT: Gah, I should read more closely; most of this paragraph is redundant. Sorry)

Be sure to include a list of possible props for people to use (silly hats, chalkboards, etc.) because those make for great crazy booth photos.
