Is the IQ from the 5d3 really as bad as everyone is saying?

I don't think anybody is saying IQ from the 5D3 is bad. Just not a huge step up from the 5D2, and a clear step down from the D800. But bad? Not a chance.

I think it's a great Cam.... and I am not using a lot of it's capability. I just would be more passionate about it if they had not priced it at $3500, but somewhere in the $2500-2700 range.

Somewhere in the future, I can see thing going to Managerial Policy textbooks in MBA classes on how Canon overpriced the 5D3 over the similar/more capable D800. Was this a brilliant move or gaffe?

Here is a 5D3 macro shot with the 180mmL You can get satiated with the details of this 22mp sensor... (I did not have the original file so downloaded it from my Facebook album which was highly compressed by FB, as can be seen by banding and other compression artifacts) But the details offered are impressive. The image has been PP'ed. 7 images were focus stacked/ blended. There was some sharpness applied via Topaz detail2 )

Looks like the IQ is fine Gary.  Could possibly use a bit more post processing as the background needs to be pulled away from your subject a bit more since they are similar in color but other than that the image appears fine.

Actually, I kind of like it the way it is.  One of the nice things about this shot is showing how well this bird blends in with his environment.  For me, that is what makes the shot.  To each his/her own.

Think that last question was a rhetorical one - this is a forum full of 5D3 'Pre-Order' Boys (and Girls too). Would've been a gaffe if everyone was saying "what there is a new 5D?" and there were no wonderful images on display like those of Snowy Owl's, amazing soccer kids pics and a photo of a human eye that exudes nostalgia for "Blade Runner, The Director's Cut". You could be right on the mark as to Canon Inc.'s pricing strategy as a seminal business case-study for future MBA postgrads in 2025

Got a 5D3 for some time now. Only thing I can say WOW! Never had such good pictures with any other camera I had.

I too moved from the 50D and L lenses to the 5D mark III.  The image quality of the 50D was outstanding but horrible low light performance at iso higher than 800.  I believe the 50D at 800 iso is not as good as the 5D3 at 12,300 iso.  Full frame really helps as well.  I'm just flat out loving it.

Agreed. I love my 50D but applying NR at ISO 400 breaks my heart every time.

Nice shot, though the green gradient is not very smooth - I'm using magic lantern for this on the 60d, what do you use on the 5d3? Helicon Remote? Manual?

Thanks Marsu, I was lazy and used CS5 auto blending (stacking) it does an ok job, sometimes misses areas of focus... it is about 70%-80% accurate. Sometimes I manually blend in some areas other times not. The green gradient is not smooth due to Facebook compression. The original is slightly better although I would like CS5's gaussian blur to have smooth gradients sometimes... it introduced banding even if I keep pixel size 40+

The EXIF info was gone...why?

I've seen this happen when I go from RAW to JPG.  Open the JPG in a 3rd party app and then crop to another JPG.
