Once the D600 arrives, Nikon will have a current, modern, camera with all of the current bells and whistles. The 5D2 will be missing those and when you draw up the list of features to compare (including 24 vs 21 MP), you'll never fall on the side of the 5D2.
24MP sure does sound awfully similar to what every Sony camera is rolling with right now...I wouldnt be so certain you are getting the newest sensor tech they have.

I'll also be curious to see what that does to D800 sales when it comes out. For wedding shooters, I'm not sure they'd have a reason to stick D800 over D600. Likewise for people upgrading from their D3100/D5100/etc...a D600 will seem great in comparison. It'd be funny to see them cannibalize the market for their media darling so quickly

There won't be a new cheap FF body(below 2000$) anytime soon (at least sooner than 2015). Sorry folks, but that's final..

Why do people think a Mark II fills the gap of an entry level FF.  Its OLD.  I think it is far easier to market a new camera at the main desk at Best Buy even if it is crippled than a clearly older camera - Mark II comes before Mark III - even if everyone here argues that the Mark II is still very good, uneducated cosnumers will not. But I guess such a camera would dent the Mark II's second hand price now would it?

What I do not understand is why everyone here thinks FF = Pro.  Leave the xD's for th Pro line whether FF or APSC.  These would be magensium alloy, wheather sealed, AF monstors.

Then give the hobbyist that does not have $3,500 for a FF an option sub $2,000.  I still think a 70D will be great for this.  With the inevatible mirrorless, there would conceivably be 5 APSCs if the 70D remains crop.  Making the 70D a rebel FF will give it some meaning again.

And recycling the current Mark III sensor won't eat up 5D sales, just as the the 600D/60D/7D all co-existed nicely.  Canon knows how to cripple stuff just enough.

What did Steve Jobs say about canibalising your own products.  I think a D600 from Nikon (if it pans out at $1,500) can be far more disrubting than the D800.  Just remember Canon's success when the Rebel dipped under a $1,000.

An entry FF may be introduced when Canon discontinue the 5DII. (not anytime soon)

If it is a cut down 5d3.  What would you remove? Add in costs of any new items required ie new autofocus system and increased costs due to lower production run.

Cost is more likely to be $2500-3000 not the $2000 tag suggested.

... um, how would you both know? I certainly don't think the 5d2 is staying in production until 2015.

The 5d2 price isn't dropping
Except for, you know, the fact that it did drop in Canon's store

No, I didn't know - thanks for telling. I should have been more precise: In *Germany* where I live the 5d2 price used or new didn't drop during the last two month (since the 5d3 price & availability announcement). US customers seem to be more lucky due to the larger market.

I don't follow. EF-S lenses will still work perfectly fine on compatible cameras. One way to interpret what you're saying is that APS-C cameras don't deserve good, dedicated lenses, which I think is rubbish.

ef-s lenses don't work on aps-h and full frame, and it's Canon not me thinking that there shouldn't be any L or sealed lenses for the ef-s mount.
