There are also rumors that Nikon has invited some European resellers for a meeting in Casablanca on 28 May, 2012. I am not sure if this is related to the D600.

New/updated Nikon D600 specifications:

24.7MP full frame sensor

The Nikon D600 will have built-in AF motor
The body most probably will be weather sealed
The D600 may not have built-in GPS as initially reported
ISO range: 100-6400 (with Lo-1 ISO 50 and Hi-2 ISO 25,600)
39 AF points (with an option of 11 AF points), 9 cross-type AF points
AF face detection
Exposure compensation: ±5 EV (same as the D800)
The D600 will probably use the EN-EL15 rechargeable Li-ion battery

Sounds a lot like the 5DmkII to me and probably at similar price points.  So what do you expect?  Put a full frame sensor in the 7D?  There's only $400 difference in the two now, you going to quibble over $200?  Put a full frame chip is a rebel?  Lot of sweet spot between $800 and $2200, so split the difference - and kill the 7D?  Canon has options about every $300 from entry level T3 to the 5DmkII so where would you place it?  There's a lot of price point difference between the 5DmkII and the 5DmkIII - so come it with a new offering at the $2700 mark?  Better be a hell of a lot better than the mkII!

My take on the whole 'entry level full frame' would be if the nikon d600 does turn out to be a $1,500 ff camera, then to compete [If they want to] canon will either:
A] Lower the price of the 5dmkii even more to make up for the ancient af, or more likely..
B] Bring out a new ff body using the 5dmkii sensor and the af from the 7d and a possibly a plastic body.

They've been making the 5dmkii sensor long enough for it to be fairly cost effective I'm guessing. Using that sensor, or a tweeked version, combined with a 7d af will match it more evenly with the d600 than the 5dmkii and still make the 5dmkiii seem like a decent upgrade and keep from cannibalizing sales. The body will probably be plastic to keep costs down.
7d af would be a good choice because it's infinitely better than the current 5dmkii. I know its not close to the supposed 39 af d600 but canon have nearly always lagged behind on af points to nikon [except 5dmkiii] so there's nothing new there. They could even do around 20+ af but I don't think they would want to approach a too high number because this could really damage mkiii sales.
Fps will probably be around 4, again this will be competitive to the d600 but a step down from the mkiii.

This is all complete guesswork however

The Nikon D600 is supposedly similar to a D3200 with FF.  No bells and whistles, only works with "G" lenses, and would not compete with a 5D MK II. 
 
A FF Canon Rebel might be the equivalent.
 
I think Nikon would be smart to do it, it will sell more high end lenses, and thats where the big profit lies.

That makes sense, then even the 5dmkii would be seen as an upgrade with better build quality and handling.
They would essentially have 3 ff offerings, 2 'entry level' [5dmkii + ff rebel] and pro 5dmkiii. When/if they bring out a high megapixel ff, then they'll have something for everyone.

I'm just wondering how long they will keep making the 5dmkii for? I just can't help but think once the 5dmkiii is widely available, its game over for the mkii.

Well in my opinion Canon already have cheap FF DSLR called 5D Mark II, in here Finland 7D costs 1349€ and 5D2 costs 1799€ and 5D3 costs 3799€
( 5D2 is currently at sale normal price is 2500€ )
That' seems to be cheap DSLR at the moment, sits perfectly between 7D and 5D3 price range.

That's a nice price for a 5dmkii! Over here its still £1,600 with the 7d at around £1,000 ish.
For me an 'affordable' FF  would be around £1,200. If the 5d mkii dropped to that, then sunday monday happy days!

The sensor is the most expensive part of most DSLRs, so maybe the $1500 price could become a reality if they stick it in a cheap body.  From what I've heard the D800 feels pretty flimsy compared to the 5DIII.  So to counter the D600 with something at a similar price point would probably require them to cheapen other aspects of the camera.  But if it can get people into the world of FF I'm sure it will sell either way, not everyone needs weather sealing.

The D600 could end up costing more than $1500 though, rumors suggested the 5DIII would be around $3000 (ended up being 3500) and that the 1DC would be around $10,000 (it was $15,000, although I've heard it might debut around $12k).

Please Nikon, put out an entry level FF body.   Competition is great, the better Nikon does, the better Canon will do ( and vice versa).  I'm not going anywhere, I have invested in Canon and happily so.
