I love this lens.  It's small, fast, focuses much faster than the 1.2 and it is a great value.  What's not to love?

I prefer the 100mm F/2.

BTW, both the 85 and 100 needed zero MFA.  :)
I was quite amazed my 85mm was the same after running focal repeatedly.

This lens is totally delicious! If you are on the fence about buying one, go back in time and purchase it, because you should already own it. For less than $400 you cannot find a better portrait lens.

All of these were taken on a 50D at probably f/2.0-2.2 and available light only.

Very nice!  Do you mind if I ask your PP process to get this look?

It's a little different for each photo, but in general (in Lightroom) for the photo of the little girl:

Don't be afraid to be extra generous with your sliders, especially in tone curve. Faded color does wonders for portraits, just don't go overboard.

Also, while being generous in tone curve, be frugal with split toning. A little bit goes a long way.

after having used the 85mm f1.8 for some time i read the photozone review and wanted to test the 100mm f2.0..... i sold the 85mm f1.8 after my testing.

my 100mm f2.0 has WAY less purple fringing then my 85mm f1.8 and is a bit sharper also.
there are sure variations from lens to lens and i can only speak about my two tested lenses.

but i also like that the 100mm f2.0 compresses a bit more then the 85mm.

i see no noticable difference in the bokeh.

I am thinking about both.... why the 100/2 over the 85/1.8 ?

Does anyone have comparison shots?

William Castleman compared the 85/1.8, 100/2, and 135/2:
http://www.wlcastleman.com/equip/reviews/85_100_135/index.htm

At f/2, he states the 100 is noticeably softer than the other two.

EDIT:
He also compared the 85/1.2, 85/1.2 II, and 85/1.8, if you are interested:

JPGs?

At the time that particular shot was taken, unfortunately  :(

But I am an avid RAW advocate now.

noticeable....? i doubt that is true when you compare a few lenses not only one sample.

i can´t notice any difference in sharpness in the center.
borders do look a bit better on the 100mm @f2 compared to the 85 @f2... but you have to pixelpeep testcharts.

but i see less purple fringing with the 100mm f2.0.

i have tested a dozend samples of these lenses over the years... as they are my prefered portrait lenses and i recommend and sell them often.

you cant go wrong with either. :)

Just got this lens two days ago. It's amazing. I have shot the 1.2ii and personally I enjoy the focus speed and usability of this lens more. It's amazingly sharp and very accurate! It's better when stopped down but this only blatantly obvious on 100% crops. I feel bad I waited so long to get this lens. Primes just do it better. I can't wait till my first portrait session with this lens.

How would this compare with using a 70-200 2.8L taped and AFMA adjusted to to work best at 85mm?

Just curious.
A camera… With Canon written on it. Oh, and some lenses… Also with Canon written on them.
