EF 24-70 f/2.8L II

CPN magazine lists an “EF 24-70 f/2.8L II”. Typo? Probably. Here’s the picture anyway.

The lens is coming, the patent exists. Makes sense that i’ll arrive with the next full frame announcement from Canon, or shortly after. Who knows with all the Canon lens delays though.

thanks dimitri

EF 8-15 f/4L Fisheye Delayed Again?

B&H Photo is showing the lens will be arriving in May now, instead of March. Check it out.

thanks doug

EF 400 f/2.8L IS II

Delayed the same as above.

5D Mark III External Recorder?

A tipster said the prototype 5D Mark III or similar body is being tested with an external recorder capable of recording RAW video. He was unsure whether or not it was a Canon accessory or a 3rd party product.

1Ds Mark IV

I’ve received a couple of tips from underwater housing stores about the 1Ds Mark IV. It’s claimed it will be the same housing as the 1Ds Mark III.

Underwater housings have never been a good barometer for upcoming products, so I don’t even link the stores anymore. Everything I’ve been told about the 1Ds Mark IV states it will be an ergonomic change from the 1Ds3.

April Announcements?

Lots of tips saying April is the month for the next announcement. Nikon is looking to be on the same schedule. I will be very wary of April Fools Day.

Indonesia

I’m off to Indonesia on March 24 for a couple of weeks. I may have a fill-in for a few days while I’m away.

It's a typo. The text in French says that the "EF 24-70 f/2.8L" (not EF 24-70 f/2.8L II), is succeeding the EF 28-70 f/2.8L (not EF 24-70 f/2.8L).  Also, France always get the latest bodies and lenses 6 months after US or Canada.

An external raw video recorder?!? Exactly what serious videographers have wanted in the 5DMkII. I have a feeling that, regardless of the pixel count, the body of the 5DMkIII (or whatever) will be real star. For one thing, if Canon gets serious about video, I want to see if/how they handle viewfinder masking.

And there is no reason why Canon can't use the same body architecture for multiple cameras: (1) FF, low pixel count, a video camera that takes really nice still images (2) FF, high pixel count, a still image camera that takes really nice videos, (3) APS-C/APS-H, low/medium pixel count, a speed demon optimized for sport shooters.

And Canon may be timing their introduction for maximum impact at the NAB show.

The same English issue of the CPN magazine doesn't have the "II" typo.

Note that the portion of the picture on the left has 16-35mm on the lens

It's a typo - the article says it supersedes EF 28-70 f/2.8 (which 24-70 really did).

It's short for a typographical error.

In a modern context would generally mean someone typed it in wrong.  In a historical context would often be a typesetting or transcription error when framing the movable metal characters that make up a page of text.

If Canon is reading this,  not only include RAW ext. record, but have a good in camera Codec as well. Something in the 4:2:2 50mb rate would make us Video guys buy that camera in force. With an in camera 4:2:2 codec, I would buy the 5d3 the day it comes out.

I'm hoping the moire and aliasing will be gone too.

Just to clarify... the article is about recommended lenses for portraits, and goes all the way from the wide EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM to EF 135mm f/2L USM. The magazine layout is two columns, and the part of the 16-35mm lens seen in the image to the left belongs to the other column describing that lens. A picture of the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM lens (sans "II") is shown below the text displayed in the image.
