A bit more info
The post from a couple of days ago sparked a lot of conversation. For the most part, most things were confirmed. The current cameras out there are not production models and will be returned to Canon when the production cameras hit the marketplace.

A few did mention that the end of June beginning of July is still the target date, but the quantity will be very small. I’m told a few sports photographers will be allocated the 1D X first. Retail availability in July was mentioned as being “optimistic”. August or September may be the months when big stock numbers hit the marketplace.

Wow. If this is true, I think canon needs to have a very serious look at its internal and external PR/communications set up. I like this site, but something as serious as a delay that could be until September, needs to be handled by professional PR people who are paid by or work for canon. Instead they remain quiet. That shocks me more than the delays.

Meh, does not surprise me.  And Nikon is not any better imho. Go and try to find a D800 or a D4 somewhere in stock...

I can't believe this... I pre-ordered this camera when it was announced back in October and I found out a couple of days later that my girlfriend was pregnant. Now, I might have to find a temporary camera to photograph my first born because the due date is first of August.

After the 1D3 focus scandal... How can Canon do this to customers. Yes of course I what the 1Dx to be perfect when it launches but what are they doing? The 5D3 is out now and there is no major problems to report. So the 1Dx delay much be about something different than the 5D3 feature. Maybe the problem is with the new metering, or f/8 AF, or mirror mechanics.

But so far, no failure was reported from people who had the camera for 2-4 days. I'm pissed because when my 1D2 broke down last August I decided to wait for the new flagship camera. I expect to wait 3 months, not a year!

Seems to me that when they announce a new camera such as this, at a press conference, with all of the hoopla, and then go underground for several months, and then give you another impression of an imminent release in February or March, then nothing again, and then you are told June, and then nothing again, and now the rumors are anywhere between July and SEPTEMBER, and only in limited numbers, we are now looking at upwards of an entire YEAR since the initial press-conference/release....WOW, is all that I can say.....wish I'd have kept my 1Ds MK III instead of selling it, in anticipation of getting this camera....still a huge disappointment as it is looking more and more like 1 year after initial press conference before the little guy can get one of this, not like they are giving them away

We can probably make a few educated guesses now.  It would seem that the people who are getting these cameras are under NDA, or more info would be available.  These would be Canon's trusted testers, possibly the same folks who tested the pre-announcement bodies.  What I'd infer (read: guess) from this is that (1) if the delay is caused by a defect or needed upgrade, then it's a "non-critical" element, e.g. video or f/8 AF.  Canon would not put these cameras in pro hands for the Olympics if they expected to be embarrassed by the results. (2) this is waaayyy too much delay for a simple production problem; if it is a production problem then it would likely be related to a change of a major component.

Maybe this will be the slap from the invisible hand of the free market that Canon needs to be more aggressive with feature upgrades.

Down right annoying! What possible good, is a camera that I cannot hold in my hands? Seems that when an announced availability date is brought up, another month is added to it. I wonder how Cannon feels being in a solid second place?

But yes, I will keep waiting!

maybe, just maybe this camera is soooo GOOD they don't want to sell them. Maybe. Who knows?

It's very unfortunate for Canon to delay this camera to the masses...  I'm sure they did it to take some of the thunder out of Nikon's D4 announcement...  But the delay looks REALLY bad.  I wonder if the tsunami/earthquake had anything to do with the delay?

The silver-lining is that when it IS available to the masses, I might have the cash for it by then!
