60D is currently the best xxD Canon DSLR?

The 30D (59) is a touch under the 20D (62) and the 50D (63) is just a wee bit below the 40D (64) but the 60D bests them all. Of course the 7D shouldn't be left out and whilst it scores 5% better than the 60D in low-light ISO, they rate it overall as the same (66). The 7D also bests the 60D in dyanmic range (landscape) but the 60D takes the honors for portrait colour depth (22.2 vs 22).

The other takeaway from this is that both the 30D and 50D were a step down in IQ from their predecessor, so I wonder if the 70D (the next odd-numbered xxD DSLR) will fit that pattern?

60D and 7D IQ is very similar. Unfortunately, it's very similar to their 15MP predecessor sensor too. Few people I know have upgraded from their 50D to the 60D. DR improvements are in the range of fractions of EVs.

If Canon keeps using the same old sensor, again, IQ will not improve that much. Digic5 will of course bring some improvements, but I believe it will hardly be worth an upgrade, especially for 7D users.

It doesn't matter if a number is from dxo or other systems that dumb down complex data to one number - from some point on, the reduction in complexity is so large that the result is nonsense. I know because I studied statistics, and these people make a living from saying something like "63.57% of all statistics are wrong".

So don't let any number switch off your brain: The differences between current Canon aps-c sensors is minor, the last upgrades just added mp for more noise, but it's the same if shots are sized down again. What matters more is pattern noise, which the 7d is more prone to with its dual cpu design. But in difficult lighting situations any Canon aps-c falls apart, but up to 800 and in good light it's fine if dr doesn't go off the scale.
