RLPhoto -- you're going to have to do a big catch up sometime in the near future. With the impending Windows 8 OS you'll be three systems behind with XP, and more and more software will be not supported. I was in the same place a couple of years ago nursing a year 2000 computer using Win2K. It's like the floor just starts crumbling under you! On the plus side, you'll have entirely skipped over Vista and Win7.

Anyway to stay on topic -- for me, the 5D3 adds insufficient value.

Windows 7 Pro 64-bit w/SP1 - OEM version is only $139 on newegg.  Even if you feel wary about the OEM version, since you have Win XP you can buy an UPGRADE license instead of full retail, both of which are identical and allow a clean install.  The retail copy of the upgrade is only $175

Also,  what RAM are you buying that's $200?   Not knowing how old your system is, i can't say exactly, but 4gb of older RAM (DDR2-800, for example) can be had for under $50.    Newer memory is even cheaper!

I use crop and FF bodies. Both are great at what they do, but 3500$ for a 5D3 plus the support it will need will be too expensive for me to justify over my aging, die hard, 5Dc.

5D3 - 3500$
Windows 7 Pro retail - 250$

Lightroom 4 to process RAW files - 150$

Total for moving to a 5D3
4100$ + Tax.

Ouch. Too much $$$$ for what i offers compared to just 1700$ for a MK2. Easy choice.

I Know. XP will die sooner or later. At that point, I will be ready but until then 4000$ in the pocket has more weight than moving workflows. I'm still using CS3 photoshop also, might as well update that. Tack on another 800$ for CS6...

I've had a bad experience with upgrades. Long story short, I just buy retail copys now. Less hassle.

I've got 4GB of ram, and my Mobo support's 16GB. I'll just buy 16GB and dump my old ram. Future proof it now and not worry about it for another 6 years LOL.

So, the initial small but statistically relevant poll sample so far supports obvious observation on these forums to date.

A vast majority of those who actually own the 5D III love it, are wholeheartedly satisfied with it, and are not complaining, even or especially about the price.

And then there are those who would definitely like one but can not afford it at this time, or ever. This subset is divided into those who are hopeful and those who are bitter and thus complain.

And, of course, there are "other."

Just curious as to how you process now.  Why would you need all that extra stuff for Mk III and NOT the Mk II?  Compatability?

Lightroom 4 threw that out of the window as they no longer support Win XP. Now i'll need 8gb of RAM to run Win7 smoothly, Retail copy of Win7 for re-installs, and lightroom 4 itself to process.

Added PC centric option to the list.
