a 5D classic as a option, used goes for 900-100 depends where you are. but AF is pretty much the same as Rebels.

The current Rebel AF system is based on the 30D's AF system (which was upgraded for the 40D to all 9 cross-type, but the 50D and 60D use the 40D's AF).  The 5D and 5DII use essentially the same system, which is better than the Rebels in many ways.  Although both have 9 selectable points with only the center as a cross-type, the 5D/5DII have 6 more 'invisible' AF points which improve the AI-Servo AF performance relative to the Rebel line (although the 7D is much better for AI-Servo).  More importantly, the 5DII's center AF point does much better in low light than a Rebel, and even better than my 7D, locking on focus in light so dim that even my 7D, much less a Rebel, can't manage without an AF assist beam.

if you are looking at a 40D, why not look for a 5D classic as a option, used goes for 900-100 depends where you are. but AF is pretty much the same as Rebels.

As stated above, the AF is not exactly the same as the rebel. And although the 5D is a fantastic camera, it's still twice as much as a 40D and the ergonomics aren't exactly great compared to the 40D. But, if you want to get into FF cheaply, the 5D is where it's at.
