According to B&H that's almost exactly (45.97mm) he length of the current 800mm f5.6. Am I missing something?

He's either being sarcastic or got the wrong number--the digital picture has the current 800 at 46.1 inches long.

Canon has issued a lot of lens patents with their new radial diffractive lens technology, apparently, they feel that they can improve the process enough to make practical production.  Its very difficult to get just the perfect particle dispersion in the resin so that the right colors of light will be diffracted the right amount.  The price will be very high, but the result can be a amazing reduction in size.
I keep expecting to see it an a new lens.

They will have to take care of IQ too (including the lenses behavior with 1.4X and 2X teleconverters) not only size and weight.

I'm waiting for the EF 600mm f/4L IS Pancake lens.   

Personally, I'm holding out for the TS-E 12-1200 f/0.95 L IS pancake....

or the 8-1500 f1.2L H-IS macro with 1.4/2x built in extender

You early adopters can pave the way for the rest of us. I'm holding out for the TS-E 12-1200 f/0.95 L IS pancake mk II. I heard it's going to blow the mk I out of the water.
