I did buy one for about 3k and we did an EOS utility shutter count and it was around there, 10k.  Ended up getting dust on the sensor the first outting (very hot and windy and had to change lenses a few times) so since it's under warranty and it's gone right now, at Canon for a cleaning

Might I ask a question which might seem quite uninformed?

My own camera is a 5D II with grip, and I am also now borrowing the 1Ds III. I have previously borrowed the 85 F1.2L, but then shot it with my 5D II. I had to throw away most of the pictures I shot with that combo (ca. 80%), and that is the reason I went with the 85 F1.4 Sigma instead (that and price of course:). I have now also borrowed the 85L, and I am using it on the 1Ds III, and I have an exponential growth in keepers.. This might be because I am getting better at taking shots, but I cannot shake the thought that the combo of the AF on the 1Ds III and the 85L works better than the 5D II and the same lens?

I posted my question in another thread that I started a long time ago when I was trying to decide which 85 to buy, the Sigma 85 1.4 or the Canon 1.8. I ended up with the former. .. Random Orbit suggested that the problem I had with the focusing with my 5D II might be solved by microadjustment..? It could very well be, but I am only borrowing the 85 1.2 for a couple of weeks, and microadjustment seems like so much hassle:)

I am no expert on cameras or lenses, and my own is a 5D II. I have borrowed this 1Ds III for a couple of years, and I would say for that price I would go for it if I were you. Remember also that the shutter count is to be considered to the fact that the latter can have more exposures than the former. I think the limit for the 5D II if my recollection serves me well is 150.000 before it should be replaced, and the 1Ds III 300.000? The latter is built like a tank, and feels also very much like outstanding quality in the hand.

There is no problems with AF on the 1Ds3.  The problem isn't microadjustment either; it's the inferior focusing ability of the 5D2 vs. 1Ds3.  I've shot sports with the 85L with a 1D Mark IV and had no problems, whereas with the 5D2 I had some OOF shots more often.  The 1Ds3 AF ability is SUPERIOR and probably is just as good as the 1D4 in my experience.

the 1D bodies deliver higher voltage to AF on lenses giving them a bit more speed I think the 85L performs better on a 1D body than 5D for this reason

Thank you guys, do you know of any BIG known problems with the 1Ds 3 I am not familar with the camera, I have held it once and love the style, and feel, but I dont know of any complaints, Ive tried searching the forum, but too many other threads appear, thanks again

There have been reports of AF issues, and multiple fixes that improved things.  Both the 1D MK III and the 1Ds MK III have had the issue.
You will have to check yours to see if there is a issue, I did not have any problems with mine.

NOTE:  The issues identified with the 1D MK III have also been found with the 1Ds MK III, but, since its not a sports body, they generally have been a lesser issue.

Hi all, i own a 1DS 3, 7D and 1D4. The S is amazing. It has an x factor the others dont have. Its as clean as a whistle at 1600 ISO. I think the color renidition is excellent and way better than my 7D which feels like a toy in the handling dept conpared to the S. That said DXO sensor performance is pretty similar for the 5D's new and old and the S. Ive posted a few landscapes which i always use the s for, usually shot at lower ISO's. Portraits are amazing as the other guys say. Its built like a brick, really solid and its been dropped on a concrete floor twice, a rock once, been out in deserts, snow, rain and sea and still works %100 ok. Its heavy but thats what you expect, tank like build quality. The 4 is a different league again for sports but the s can do them all be it a bit slower. It will last you a lifetime.

I owned a 1DsM3 for 4 years and I loved it. I never had any issues with it, I loved it for its build, the autofocus, the low shutter lag (took handheld pictures of lightning just to see if it was fast enough) and image quality. It is definetly not a high ISO camera, but when I put it on CL for 4k to get money for the 1D X, it sold within 24 hours to the first of 4 potential buyers, and that speaks a lot for this camera.

The 1Ds3 is a real upgrade to the 5DII if you are shooting at low iso

Also the 1Ds2 is a really good update for the 5D classic
